I thought about it for a long moment and decided to use only dramas and films that came out (or were subbed) in 2010. I focused not only on the romance, but also on the family, friendships, and growth of the characters. This is my Christmas/New Years gift to my Asian-drama lovin' f-list! Also, say tuned at the end, for a very special Outro!

walkwithheroes: [The Princess Bride] ([Gloria] Wish It Could Last Forever)
Gloria's 37th and 38th episodes really brought home one simple fact: KS/JJ and DA/YS are two couples that are meant to be. There is no doubt about that. Both couples had some major break through this week. There were a couple of game changers. And, I've decided something: Creepy must die. Jail is too good for him.

YS and DA - don't say that! )

Mary continues to be a light, fun, drama. That's developing a crack habit. It's rather underdeveloped in terms of plot and characters; but, I've watched so many angsty dramas over the last six months, so it's refreshing to watch a romantic comedy that is a bit cracky and comic-like. I have to admit that episodes nine and ten were hard to get through, but I'm enjoying the new writer.

I feel a bit sorry for her, though. She was hired and given a week to start writing episodes 11 and 12. I think the Goong writer left a lot of crap for the new writer to deal with and work out. I mean, episode ten ended with MG telling JI they should make the contract real. Oy! How do you fix that? You can't. So, you just start throwing things around and trying to find something that sticks. I think, for what she's been given, the new writer is doing a decent job. The drama has upped the pace, and characters like JI have been given personalities. Plus, the creepiness of JI's dad is being shown; while all the characters are standing up to their parents more.

Granted, she's falling back on a lot of cliches, but with only a hand-full of episodes left: I don't mind. I'll finish it, because I love the chemistry been the two leads; even between JI and MG and JI/MR. I'd love to see them all work together again. Maybe in a story that, um, makes more sense. (Of course, the original source material didn't make much sense. I can't totally blame the writers for that.)

I will be honest and say I miss the fun and off-beatness of the first five or so episodes (I miss drunken-fun MG! I miss drama-loving MR!), but I do enjoy the craziness of the last few episodes. And, it seems like the actors are all having a lot of fun - something I think a couple of them needed after their last angsty projects. Like them, I really just needed a fun drama. I've overloaded on angst, and while I love angst - however, it can get to be a bit much. (Still, with episodes 14's ending - looks like unneeded angst is headed my way next week. :( ) Can I not escape the angst?!

I guess what I'm saying is that Mary is fun. Yes, it's not a very well plotted drama, but I never really cared about anyone but MR/MG anyway. Why? Because the first writer never bothered to develop anyone outside of them or any real conflicts outside the marriage thing. What happened to MR wanting to go back to school? Or MG's whole indie vs. cooperate music thing? And why is SJ only getting a back-story now (and not even a very good one, at that?)? Or JI and his business stuff?

Look, it's not making my Top Five List for Best Drama of 2010. But MG/MR are making my Top Five List for Best Couple of 2010. And, I really want the two actors to work together again, because they have wonderful chemistry. Oh, and can JI's actor please get a lead role for his next drama project?
walkwithheroes: [The Princess Bride] ([MSOAN] Mae-Ri is Brilliant)
We've more than reached the half-way mark for this show (episodes 10-12 aired this week), and I think it's time to share some thoughts. The writer change was a good idea; you can tell the new writer is trying to get all the storylines together and trying to turn even the most hated characters (the parents) into real people. JI has become an interesting and real boy! Joon is still. . .a diva, but at least we've gotten a small reason why. And MG/MR? Are awesome and adorable.

The written preview is out at Ockoala. Ockoala says its a bit makjang, but I saw differently. Why? Well,

It's based off an online comic and a romantic comedy! )

Look, I'm not saying Mary Stayed Out All Night is the best written show ever. It's clearly not. It has a lot of plot holes (How can MR/MG have been a fake couple for 50+ days when they met in early November, and episode 8 took place on November 30th?) and the original plot doesn't make all that much sense. The Dads and Mom are unlikeable, Joon is underdeveloped (I blame it on her being an original character for the drama, used as a plot deceive by the first writer, and deemed useless by the second writer), and most of the goodness of the drama comes solely from the interactions between MG/MR/JI.

But, the doesn't make it a terrible drama that's lost its mind. It barely had a mind to begin with! Mary's always been, what it is, a romantic comedy that's just a little bit cracky. At least the new writer has stopped using the same few plots over and over again (Loser Dad tries to break up MG/MR, Creepy Dad tries to force JI/MR together, Joon throws a diva fit, Loser Mom visits MG and then leaves him to go see her boyfriend, MG/MR are cute together, a misunderstanding, its all resolved, JI looks at MR, MG/MR are cute.)

At least this writer is trying to evolve the characters a bit: the past between the parents, Joon, JI as a person, that's all being explored. I like that. The pace has picked up, JI is a real person, and the writer is trying to explain why Creepy Dad is creepy and why Loser Mom is always abandoning MG. It may not always make the most sense, but at least she's trying to turn these previously unlikeable or wooden characters into real people.

More thoughts )

In short, Mary isn't a great series. But, it's a good romantic comedy. And, just like all romantic comedies (especially those based off mangas or manhwa, a lot of the plot is out there. Mary doesn't take place in the ground world. It couldn't. It shouldn't. It takes place in manhwa world; where princes marry commoners, movie stars marry internet writers, and no one can tell a girl is a girl when she wears a boy's uniform.

Am I disappointed in the drama? A little bit, yeah. It could have gone a lot of places, but it didn't. Then again, neither does the on-line manhwa. I suppose this drama could have been better if they had stayed closer to the original source materiel, but that would have made a better daily drama. And, I doubt JGS and MGY (who make this drama) would do a daily drama.

I think what makes me sad is that people are starting to say Mary is "so bad its good" and that it "has no point". Come on, it's not a heavy drama! It hasn't made sense since day one! Two contract marriages. Creepy Dad. (And, why doesn't Creepy Dad just have MG arrested? Legally, he and MR are having an affair, and that's illegal in Korea.) The wackiness. Etc. None of it has ever made sense. But, now you turn your back on it? Just as the pace is moving forward and characters are developing. I just. . .it annoys me when people are drama snobs over a breezy romantic comedy.

I'm not angry at anyone. It just makes me sad when people watch a show for 12 episodes, then decide it's a bad drama. Just as the writer is fixing things and making things slowly start to make sense.

Or maybe its me. Maybe I love this series, MG/MR, etc, so much that I'm ignoring the bad in favor of the loveliness of MG/MR. I don't know, but I just had to get this out.

Title: Heartbeat
Song: Heartbeat by Scouting for Girls
Disclaimer: I do not own the song or the clips used. I just edited the clips.
Details: 47.28 MB. WMV file.
Theme: A look at Mae Ri and Moo Kyul's romance; mostly from MG's POV.
WARNING: Spoilers for episodes 1-12!
Vidder's Note: I usually wait and do videos after the dramas end, but I just couldn't wait with this one. MG/MR are the cutest things ever - it's like watching puppies and rainbows and a bunch of other cute things play and be adorkable together. I'm not sure I love this video though, there were a lot of beats and overlapping lyrics in this song - and, I only have crappy WMM. So, it didn't come out like I wanted. Yet, I think it came out well. I'm happy to made a cute and fast-paced video for MR/MG. And yes, I will be making a video using episodes 13-16.

The written preview for episode ten is out. It came be found at Ockoala's journal. She also reports that the Writer has been changed (starting with episode 11) to Go Bong-hwang (18 vs. 29).

Basically this preview:

annoys me )

My thoughts are fairly simple: Didn't we already do this? I love this drama to bits: especially MR/MG. But, I feel like we're just going over the same problems over and over again.

To celebrate my finals being over, I've decided to start work on a Mary Stayed Out All Night fanvid. But, before that I decided to make an outro for the video using the clips I plan on using for the video itself. The result? Two hours of work for 41 seconds of MR/MG goodness set to All I Want For Christmas Is You.

Check it out:

walkwithheroes: [The Princess Bride] ([MSOAN] Happy Together)
Giant ended today and I'd like to briefly mention the Miju/MW stuff. These two suffered a lot of angst in recent episodes, but at the end )

Overall, I think the show had a lot of issues toward the end of its run. But, overall it wasn't a terrible show. The writer spent too much time on political and business matters and stretched too many storylines to the point of frustration, but it wasn't a bad show. I give it a 7.5/10.

As for Mary Stayed Out All Night - episode nine really was brilliant. MG/MR are the cutest things in the world. ) And, we have an OTP interloper. I have to say this - my feelings on Secondarys are never wrong )

Back to studying for finals.
walkwithheroes: [The Princess Bride] ([NC] Rock Orchestra)
My finals for this semester are next week! Well, only Thursday. (One final - on three chapters!) And that means its time to get back into fandom stuff. Such as fics (yes, Baby Nobuta-Akria will be born. . .someday) and fanvids.

I normally don't vid a series until it is completely finished, but I'm watching somethings right now and I can't wait to vid them. One is Gloria - it's a long one, so I'm thinking of vidding something with the first twelve episodes, then something with episodes twelve through twenty-four, etc, etc. Basically a video for every twelve-thirteen episodes. I'm also thinking of making a video for Mary Stayed Out All Night's first nine or ten episodes, and later doing another video to cover episodes eleven-sixteen.

That's where you guys come in. Looking back at my other vids, I noticed that most of them have angsty undertones. I want to do something cheerful for Mary, but can't think of a song. I only use English language songs, because I like to follow the lyrics. So, anyone have any ideas? As for Gloria (and indeed Giant pre-craziness - think MW/Miju's early interactions and the early angst, where it looked hopeful) - well, I have some ideas. But, I'm willing to take requests.

Basically - I want to fanvid, and need a bit of a push. Thanks to anyone who responds. I just need some English language songs and maybe a request or two.
walkwithheroes: [The Princess Bride] ([MSOAN] Happy Together)
Looks like next week will be good. They had filmed episode 8 thinking it would air today, so it's a bit sad we have to wait another week for it. We're about to hit the half-way mark, which means only one thing in a romantic-comedy: a bit of angst as our Leads struggle to confess to one another.

All Korean - no, world wide - romantic comedies share a certain, uh, formula. Cuteness and bickering for the first half; misunderstandings, confessions, and angst in the middle; angst and wrap-up in cuteness for the end. Mary is looking to be no different. I'm actually alright with that, as the strength of the show is really the MR/MK relationship.

The fabulously awesome ockoala has put up a written preview for episode 8:

Reposted here, under a cut for spoilers )
walkwithheroes: [The Princess Bride] ([MSOAN] Mae-Ri Potter)
- We have achieved jealously! MK is so jealous he doesn't know what to do with himself. He's so angry that he's yelling at people and losing his cool. I find it oddly sexy. And that ending! I'm so glad we don't have to wait until week to find out what happens next.

In other news: all three parents piss me off. MK's mom is immature and selfish. MR's dad is immature and an idiot. JI's dad is creepy and emotionally/mentally abusive. It makes me wonder about SJ's parents.

After six episodes, I've decided the show's strength is the MK/MR stuff. I love that in any other drama, JI would be the Hero - with his aloofness and coldness and richness. And MK would be the artist/musician Bohemian Secondary Lead; the guy MR would lean on, but ultimately dump/break his heart. But not here! Here it's the other way around. I love that! I was thinking about something as well in regard to the idea that MR would start to ) Because, honestly, you may love and root for Min-woo or Kang Suk or Joo Won or In Soo or whoever - but, would you really want to deal with their issues and BS for the rest of your life? Would you want to attend their therapy sessions and calm them down when they get too serious or upset or claustrophobic? I think not.

As for Giant - I can't believe there are only three episodes left. It's so great to know (thanks to an ann. comment) that MW/Miju are THE couple the Korean fans care about. It's no wonder the writer is milking the angst for all its worth. But, seriously, it's time for that to end. I won't go into it, as I've harped on it enough.

I continue to watch Giant RAW - as you know I'm basically watching for Min-woo and Miju, and they break my heart more and more with each episode. Seven episodes left - can they be saved? I also watched the RAW third episode of Mary Stayed Out All Night, and found it even more adorable than the second episode.

Spoiler-filled thoughts follow for Giant

Mary is freaking adorable. I want to watch Moo Kyul and Mae Ri hang out for hours and hours. Later, their friends can come over and they can all get drunk.
