Mary and Giant Thoughts
Dec. 7th, 2010 01:42 pmGiant ended today and I'd like to briefly mention the Miju/MW stuff. These two suffered a lot of angst in recent episodes, but in the end, Miju and MW get their happy ending. I don't want to say too much, as I'm sure many of you haven't watched it. But, basically: MW nearly kills himself, but Miju stops him. He goes to jail for two years due to his shady dealings. When he gets out, he has a letter from Miju telling him to meet her and their son in England. I was disappointed that they didn't show MW finally reunite with his son and the woman he loves, but I kind of understand it. They would have to hire a 12/13 year old actor, and the actress that plays Miju looks to young to have a son that old. Plus there were too many storylines to wrap up.
Overall, I think the show had a lot of issues toward the end of its run. But, overall it wasn't a terrible show. The writer spent too much time on political and business matters and stretched too many storylines to the point of frustration, but it wasn't a bad show. I give it a 7.5/10.
As for Mary Stayed Out All Night - episode nine really was brilliant. Their little window convo and their trip were adorkable. And, we have an OTP interloper. I have to say this - I knew that Seo Jun was spoiled and I never liked her outbursts of unjustified anger toward MG, MR, and the MG/MR relationship - she has no connection to them anymore. She and MG have been apart of a year and only dated for four weeks. But, she is still pissed that he's moved on? She thinks she knows him so much more than anyone? Please! And now, she spent most of episode 9 throwing herself a pity party, then went to MG to return the pick he gave her. Okay. I understand that might be her way of helping herself move on. But, then she kissed him! Dude! Poor MG was standing there all stiff, eyes opened, looking uncomfortable. And MR saw! :(
Back to studying for finals.

Date: 2010-12-08 02:57 am (UTC)And, finally, the missing youngest sibling returns. Or, we see his back anyway. The funny thing is I read the actor playing the youngest brother is well known. But, they just showed his back?
I don't hate either of them. I could like JI much more if he'd grow up, man up, and tell his father to stop trying to rule and run his life.
I just find Joon frustrating because of her anger toward MG, MR, and even JI in regard to their complicated relationships. It really isn't any of her business. I find myself shouting: 'Get over it, girl!' at my screen whenever she's on. I really wanted to love her, but she's annoying me right now. I mean, it really seems like she's more annoyed that someone like MR has the attention of MG and JI. I don't know. She's just annoyed me since she broke the cell phone, then bought a new one, and acted like the gift made everything okay. It was just made worse when she broke her glass after learning MG/MR were 'married'. Then, we stalked MG's friends to "find out the truth", since she thought MG could never go for a girl like MR. . .how was that her business? She needs to get over herself and her past with MG. I think the writer tried to throw her a bone by having Joon tell JI about her family and him telling her about his childhood, but now. . .I don't know.

Date: 2010-12-08 09:29 pm (UTC)Just because there were actually a lot of political business stuff that got me interested in the first part of the drama (and I never am interested in politics, so that was a big surprise for me)-- and I actually got to know more in depth about the Korean political history in the earlier times. So putting the historical aspect, the drama aspect, characterization, interactions presented, and atmosphere-- I proclaim my rating.
I took away some points for those times where the story lagged, the angst broke my heart, and the small period where Giant seemed to have forgotten what its primary goal was and lost somewhat of its warmth and humanistic touch.
One thing I loved about the ending was Jo Pil Yeon's downfall. I am all with you about how they dragged it too much -- and how SM could have brought JPY down way earlier.
But watching how it all ended, I was satisfied and felt 'this' is what JPY deserved. Death would mean the end. But what JPY prized the most more than even his life, was power and status. And when all that pride was shattered, the blow he received was worse than death.
I loved what Kangmo said to JPY when he finally got arrested. JPY was saying, "Do you think you've won?"
And Kangmo said, "My goal was never to win over you. I only wanted to win over that disgusting and devilish world you lived in."
With the MW/MJ ending, what can I say, it was exactly what I predicted and wanted.
There are some people, obviously over at soompi, who are saying the MJ/MW ending is an open ending. That maybe MW just went to visit his son and that was it. -- These soompiers, I can't even enjoy my ending without them inserting some doubt into my happiness.
But all was confirmed, when on Korean news they showed how Giant had reached the 38% mark -- and the reporter said, "Indeed Giant is a happy ending. Hwang Jung Eum (Miju) has accepted the much wounded Joo Sang Wook (Minwoo) and they have started a new life with their son Wooju abroad." -- The reporter didn't even mention the other couples.
It's actually quite apparent Miju and Minwoo have started over. Maybe they didn't show the family in screen-- but we still get some glimpse of them and I think our imagination is enough to picture them in the most perfect manner each person wants.
Oh, I was watching the behind the scene footage released by SBS on Giant. And in one interview, the cast of Giant was asked which couple in Giant would they most like a happy ending for.
The choices were: Sotae and his wife. GM and JY. Sangmo and his side/spy girl. And MJ and MW.
Almost majority of the cast picked MJ and MW. Even Mr. Jo Pil Yeon. :p
I loved the ending hug between MJ and MW. It made me forget all the hardships they had and ...it was just wonderful. As for SM's death, I had a feeling from the start of watching Giant that he would die.
Remember the very very first scene in the first episode in Giant -- where it shows little KM, Miju, and baby Junmo walking through a series of vacant lands and we have KM's narration going on---when I didn't see SM there, I had a feeling.
Overall though, Giant has been a nice drama. A lot might disagree, but I found it a drama that was not only entertaining but also a drama thought taught me a lot of lessons about life and family.
Love you, Giant. ^_^ And thank you walkwithheroes -giant hug-
