walkwithheroes: [Strange Heroes] (Look After Her)
I have finally finished Strange Hero Yi Zhi Mei. I really enjoyed the show. It had some major flaws, especially in regard to its female characters and its last story arc.

Still, it was still enjoyable thanks in large part to the cast. It also had some really beautiful shots and lovely moments between the characters. By the end, I really did feel like YZM was its own little family.

Overall, I would give the thirty episode series a solid B and I would rec it to friends.

BTW: Has anyone else heard that Liu Shi Shi, Hu Ge, and Wallace Huo have been cast in the drama adaption of a Chinese novel called Da Mo Yao? The OTP is going to be played by LSS and HG, but there is also a love triangle with WH's character. According to Koala, the love triangle is fairly epic.

The story: Yu Jin (Liu Shi Shi) was raised within the Xiong Nu, although her foster father is a Han. Under certain circumstances, she was forced to flee to Chang’an, the then capital of Early Han Dynasty, changing her name to Jin Yu along the way. Along her journey, she meets first the calm and kind Meng Jiu (Wallace Huo), and later the handsome, cold, general Huo Qu Bing (Hu Ge). Jin Yu falls for one, but was rejected. Will she untangle her love knot? Who will she choose in the end?

While I'd rather see LSS/WH get together and get a bit more romantic screen time, it's not happening. :( At least LSS/HG is finally happening in a drama. I'm sure it'll make many people happy.

The Holy Pearl is a "fantasy-mythology" series that is loosely based on the Japanese manga/anime Inuyasha. I say loosely, because aside from the basic plot and a few similar characters, it really is a new story. (Though, I do think the creator of Inuyasha would have a good case if she decided to sue.)

The story starts off the way most of these types of dramas do, and honestly it didn't grab me until episode three or four. So far, what I really like about the series is the witty dialogue and most of the characters. I think the overall plot - girl from 2011 gets sent back in time and most recover lost pearls - is fairly standard in these types of time traveling stories. (See: Inuyasha and even Fushigi Yûgi - though she was looking for people there)

Dramawiki has the show summary as this: Jealous of her sister's popularity with the human they protect and the love she receives from the king, Mo Yin, the human form of Goddess Tengshe, colluded with the Demon Lord Shi You Ming to kill her sister Xian Yue. The act upset the balance between the God/ Human/ Demon worlds giving demons an upper hand. Xian Yue reincarnated as Ding Yao and returned to restore order. With the help of Wen Tian, a human-dragon hybrid, she set on a mission to re-forge the anti-demon vase using the holy pearls that Goddess Nuwa left behind from creating the human world. But, that's really just the first three episodes. Things get much more interesting and fun after that.

characters and spoilery thoughts on them )

Eight episodes in, and I'm really enjoying the drama. The characters are more or less likeable, the dialogue is good, and the plot is fast moving. I'll keep it. (Also, what's interesting is that Yao Yao's Dad said she could have gone to one of nine different places/time periods. Anyone else feeling hints of an actual or semi-sequel with that one? Too bad Mainland China has decided to stop all time traveling dramas/films/novels/comics after 2011.)

Strange Hero Yi Zhi Mei is beyond addictive! With these four episodes, we end the flashback arc and start the final arc of the series.

As I said in my last post, the flashback arc was mostly to give more (and maybe much needed) character development to Ying Wu Qiu and Ru Yi; and even more development to Tutor and Ge Xiao. After watching it all, I can say I do feel slightly sorry for Wu Qiu, because he basically went insane due to his own personal demons. And, Ru Yi - yes, she's loyal and brave and sweet. . .but, that's about it. I just think it's too late for me to truly love her as a character. That said, she was a cool lady and I feel awful about the way she died. (Also, I think she and San Niang could have been friends in another life.

Episodes twenty-five and twenty-six moved us into the last arc of the series. The stakes are up, as Yi Zhi Mei goes up against someone whose just as smart and cunning as Ge Xiao. This is an arc that changes everything, and really focuses on the foursome, their relationships, and the possible future romance of Ge Xiao/San Niang.

Spoiler filled thoughts of episodes 25 and 26 )

As always - this show is brilliant! I can't wait to watch episodes 27-30. And, when it is all over, I'll miss is so much. I really wish that second season/film rumor was true. With the same cast, of course.
walkwithheroes: [The Princess Bride] ([Strange Hero] Unsaid Words)
Strange Hero Yi Zhi Mei continues to be the best wuxia my f-list isn't watching. (Why, f-list?! WHY?)The show - like many wuxia series - has "mini" arcs, with an overlapping series long arc.

With episodes nineteen-twenty-two, we finish up Xiao Mei's family mystery and start with a series of flashback episodes.

spoiler thoughts )

Anyway - just some thoughts. I'm loving this drama and can't wait to watch episodes 23-30. (I have episodes 23-26 downloaded and waiting for me.)

Also. . .if you aren't watching this - watch it!

walkwithheroes: [The Princess Bride] ([PPrincess] Hater Please)
I thought I'd give everyone (including myself) an update on what I'm watching. Since most of the series are half-way over, I thought it would also be a good time to discuss how I'm liking and disliking about the shows and where I think/hope they are going. (Spoiler Warnings for the drama!)

Despite wanting rom-coms, I'm barely watching them )
walkwithheroes: [The Princess Bride] ([Corner Love] Love over Class)
Lately I've found myself itching for a good wuxia/historical c-drama.I've started on Paladin in Troubled Times, and dispute some issues with the male lead, I've enjoyed it. Since I don't have much going on this summer, I have a lot of time to marathon dramas, which means I'm nearly done with Paladin. (It helps that I fast forward through the political stuff) Anyway. . . I've been thinking of what I should watch next. But, I can't seem to make up my mind. I thought I'd ask for the opinions of my f-list.

Possible dramas )

Knowing that I love great characters, wonderful interactions and chemistry between characters, solid storylines, and a great romance. . .which one(s) should I watch next? Or is there a drama I'm missing. Thanks for any opinions.
walkwithheroes: [The Princess Bride] ([ROCH] Forbidden)
I love wuxia series. I think they are amazing and great. . .but. . .I've always noticed that people usually sound the same. No one's voice seems to match who they are. I figured some people were dubbed, but I had no idea how many actors and actresses are dubbed. Apparently 98% of actors and actresses are dubbed in wuxia dramas. I often wondered why, and now I know the answers! Thanks to Ancient Chinese Series Website

I don't think I've ever heard their real voices )

Sometimes actors (like Hu Ge) will dub themselves, but mostly people are dubbed by professional voice actors and actresses. They don't always voice the same people, which is why actors and actresses always seem to have different voices. Or why sometimes you'll hear the same voice coming out of two different people. I have to say that the voice artists do wonderful jobs, because sometimes I can't even tell the actor or actress is being dubbed.

Now, I know more about dubbing and so do you.

Strange Hero Yi Zhi Mei/The Vigilantes In Masks:

I've finished episodes 1-10 and cannot wait until more subtitles are out. It's such a fun show and I'm loving the chemistry between the four leads; especially Wallace Huo and Liu Shi Shi. The show is presented in a true wuxia fashion, with cuts of comic book-like photos splashed throughout. It's great the way each member of Yi Zhi Mei has a back story and has an important role to play on their time. San Niang is such a great heroine, and I love that she's already fallen for her "Mister Ge". (Plus, she terrified of bugs. lol!)

Romance Town:

Watched the third episode RAW today - its such a wonderful surprise of a drama!

Best Love/Greatest Love:

Watched the fifth episode RAW. DJ is totally going after AJ with full force. And now I really want the secondary leads together!

Lie To Me:

I wanted to love it, but I don't. So, after 4 episodes. . .I'm saying goodbye.

Can You Hear My Heart?:

Episode 13 was such a game changer. But then, I think most episodes of this show are. I'm looking forward to this weekend!

49 Days:

Such a heartbreaking episode! I started this show thinking I wouldn't like it, and truthfully I didn't for the first few episodes. But, it's become such a great and emotional drama. I still don't care much for Yi Kyung, but I've fallen for Kang, Scheduler, and Ji Hyun.
walkwithheroes: [The Princess Bride] ([Rainbow Romance] Kiss the Girl)
I've now seen the first episode (or more) of most of the dramas I wanted to see. I thought I'd share some thoughts on each drama. So far I have to say that the drama season is going well.

Romantic and cliched dramas )

So - so far I'm really enjoying this drama season!
walkwithheroes: [The Princess Bride] ([Actors/Singers] New OTP)
Lately I've been thinking about the fact that the Asian Entertainment Industry seems to be relatively small. Or maybe its more that there are only a hand full of truly popular actors and actresses at any given time. Or, to be more correct, people tend to have their moments in the sun, and that means they work with the same people over and over again. Now, granted there are some actors and actresses that have made their living playing the 'Oh, it's him/her!' roles in dramas, specials, and films. And, there are the famous "Love Teams" in Taiwanese dramas - think Ariel Lin and Joe Cheng or Rainie Yang and Mike He.

All of this got me to thinking about the fact that many actors and actresses have worked with each other a few times throughout their careers and there are actors and actresses I'm dying to see work together. I thought I'd make a list and ask you guys who'd you'd love to see work together, either for the first time or the second or third or whatever. Because, with things the way they are in Asian Entertainment, your wish just might come true!

My list )

Though, I think there could be more if I really stopped and thought about it, that's my list. I'd love to know whose on everyone else's list.
