I have a fondness for Taiwanese dramas. They tend to do manga adaptions rather well; and, they do romantic comedies in a way I can enjoy. Yet, I haven't watched all that many. Or rather, I haven't watched that many and truly loved even less. I thought I would share the Taiwanese dramas that I've watched and/or truly loved, and ask for a few recs from my f-list.

So, based on that - any recs?

Lately I've been thinking about the fact that the Asian Entertainment Industry seems to be relatively small. Or maybe its more that there are only a hand full of truly popular actors and actresses at any given time. Or, to be more correct, people tend to have their moments in the sun, and that means they work with the same people over and over again. Now, granted there are some actors and actresses that have made their living playing the 'Oh, it's him/her!' roles in dramas, specials, and films. And, there are the famous "Love Teams" in Taiwanese dramas - think Ariel Lin and Joe Cheng or Rainie Yang and Mike He.

All of this got me to thinking about the fact that many actors and actresses have worked with each other a few times throughout their careers and there are actors and actresses I'm dying to see work together. I thought I'd make a list and ask you guys who'd you'd love to see work together, either for the first time or the second or third or whatever. Because, with things the way they are in Asian Entertainment, your wish just might come true!

My list )

Though, I think there could be more if I really stopped and thought about it, that's my list. I'd love to know whose on everyone else's list.

It seems countries like Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Mainland China are always using mangas, manhwas, and manhuas as inspiration for their dramas. In fact, it seems like 90% of Japanese dramas in the last few years have been based on mangas. And, how many Taiwanese Idol dramas are based on Shoujo mangas? Too many for me to count, that's how many. Also, many films are based on mangas, manhwas, and manhuas: High School Debut, Usagi Drop, Kimi ni Todoke, Tazza: The High Rollers, Le Grand Chef, Duelist, etc.

Recently, I've also noticed that all four of these countries are adapting each others stories into dramas/remaking each others' works: Old Boy (loosely based on a Japanese manga), Xuan Feng Guan Jia (loosely based on a Japanese manga), Boys Before Flowers and Let's Go Watch a Meteor Shower (based on a manga), Maou (adapted from The Devil), etc.

And, it seems more adaptions and remakes are on the way for all four countries. They'll continue to adapt things from their countries and others, as well as remake others works. This lead me to an interesting thought, that I'm sure I've expressed before: What Manga/Manhwa/Manhua do you want to see adapted for the small or large screen? And what country do you want to make it - I ask this because there are lots of Japanese mangas I like that I know couldn't be told on Japanese television - the country or origin or another country? Finally, do you want any country to remake another drama/film from another country - like Maou did with The Devil?

For me I really do think Honey and Clover would make an excellent Korean drama. It has it all: drama, comedy, love triangles, close friendships, close family relationships. And, it's already been an anime, Japanese film, Japanese drama, and Taiwanese drama. So, why not a Korean drama? I could see it being 18-20 episodes since the original manga is ten volumes. It's set in an art college, so the visuals would be beautiful. I would have worries though: like, well, remember the second half of Boys Before Flowers? But, if the writing was good and the casting was right - I can't think of anyone right now, but I'm sure there are some 20-30 year old actors who would fit the parts - it could work.

There's apart of me that would love to see Nosatsu Junkie turned into a ten-twelve episode Japanese drama. The summary makes it seem a bit weird: Teenage boy cross dresses as a girl in order to model, and must keep it a secret. He befriends than falls for a girl who wants to be a model and knows his secret. But, it works because of the heart of the manga and the chemistry between the leads.

I'm sure I could think of others, if I had the time. But. . .I should get back to studying. Or go to sleep.

  • I started school and am taking four (almost wrote fourteen. lol) I thought it would be easy, but - I am starting to think there will be a lot of reading and studying. (Oi) For one thing: I have the same Biology prof. as I did last spring. She's known for her harsh tests and her 95 notes per chapter. Yes, chapter. And there are four to six tests on a chapter. Tha's about 380 to 570 pages of notes per test. Thankfully, myself and three other girls have gotten a study group together. We nare meeting tomorow and then twice a week for the more next two weeks - first test is on Feb. 5th. Which is also the day of my first Stat. test. I have a feeling there will be lots of reading and word defining over the next couple of weeks. Because, seriously, my Stat. prof. cannot teach. She basically spends the entire one hour and fifteen minutes reading defs off sheets of paper. And sadly, she's the only prof. teaching the class at my college. :/ It's my last math, so I'll just have to suck it up. As for my other two classes: my American Lit teacher seems like he won't be around much - he's having some health issues, the poor guy. As for my Survey of the Arts teacher - way too much of an art snob for my taste. Who cares about light, lines, and shapes? I don't. I care about what the artist was trying to say, what the piece says to me, and if the piece makes me feel something.

  • This japanese drama season is going to be so busy for me. I started off with a list of about ten shows that I wanted to check out; though it's now been taken down to:Love Shuffle, Uta no Onii-san, Kami no Shizuku, Zeni Geba, and Mei-chan no Shitsuji. I may also try Triangle. I do have the first episode Triangle on my computer, with subs. I just haven't watched it yet. I tried Voice, and despite loving the cast, just could not get into it.  Uta no Onii-san had  a good first episode, but I will admit to being a little bored. However, a few people told me the second episode was better, so I'll see if it's a keeper on my download list. I'm also waiting for Love Shuffle and Kami no Shizuku to have subtitles. Zeni Geba had a flashback heavy first episode. But, the second episode looks good. Too bad it seems like no one (I know) is watching it. I'm loving Mei-chan, though! It's like, the crack!drama of the season.

  • On the korean drama season front: it looks likes it might just be Boys Before Flowers.  I like the leads, of course. However - I am 'shipping Yi Jung and Ga Eul so hard. They just fit so well together, and really do seem more like the typical Korean drama romcom OTP then Jan Di and Joon Pyo. Don't get me wrong: I love JD/JP - they have lovely chemistry and their love/hate has always been a fav. I'm just really loving YJ/GE. As for  Ji Hoo. . . uh, a lot of it has to do with Kim Hyun Joong - who is slowly getting better - but, JH is just coming off as rather unfeeling and even a little cruel in terms of kissing JD and his 'tude toward the aftermath. I understand why he's doing what he's doing, but it is bad form. And then there's Woo Bin, who never seems to have anything to do no matter what asian nation he's in. I kid, I think Kim Joon is doing fine. I can see him playing the "friend" role and the "secondary guy" for a few more years, before getting his chance as a leading man - maybe.
  • I may also watch The Return of Iljimae  - if it gets subbed. Really just KST and With S2 do Korean subtitles. And I know With S2 isn't subbing it. As for KST, who knows. They still haven't finished Tazza and who knows what they are planning on doing next.

  •     In casting news: Yoo Ha Na (of My Lucky Star) is going to be in another Tw-idol-drama! She signed a three series contract with  SETTV, but was "frozen" for the last couple of years. I'm not sure why she was "frozen" - maybe to learn Mandarin? Maybe because they wanted to pair her with Jimmy Lin again? I don't know, but her new drama is called Next Station, Happiness. She'll be staring with Ming Dao. Ming Dao was in several very popular idol-dramas - mostly with  Chen Qiao En. All that is really known about the series is wht Ming Dao dropped in an interview - his character will become a father during the late part of the series.  (Plus, and this has nothing to do with the drama, but : apparently the lead male role in Fated to Love You was written for him. Which explains why that character (in the three or four early episodes I watched) reminded me of the characters I've seen Ming Dao play) Lastly - am I the only one that thinks Ming Dao has a huge head? Everything I see him, I think: His head is huge.

  • I watched Long Love Letter, the Japanese drama from 2002 over the course of last week.  It was. . . odd, and a bit creepy, and yet. . . I really loved it. It had some of the best acting I've seen in a japanese drama. The kids were brilliant, as were their two adult caregivers. LLL was heartbreaking and yet moving at the same time. It explored the human psych really well. In a way, it reminded me of the early episodes of LOST - before all the Others, polar bears, smoke monsters stuff. I want to write more about this series, so look forward to it having its own post, a video, and maybe even a Otomo/Nishi Ayumi fic.  BTW: the actress that played Nishi isn't listed on dramawiki. But, I know I have seen her somewhere before. Anyone know the actress?

  • Lastly: look forward to two Tree of Heaven vids and one Season of the Sun vid - soon!
