walkwithheroes: [The Princess Bride] ([Dream High] Notice You)
I've just finished the Korean drama Spy Myung Wol. It was a drama with many behind the scenes issues. It was a drama that changed its tone from "spy rom-com" to "melodrama-comedy-romance". SMW could have been a hot-mess, and indeed, it had its weaknesses. But, for all it's faults - and it had some - it was an enjoyable drama. The leads (all four) had wonderful chemistry and that came through.

More spoiler-filled thoughts )

Finally: I'm glad I watched this drama. Yes, it had plot-holes and it had some (okay, a lot of) issues, and the last three episodes dragged - but it was still very enjoyable. I really loved it and I loved the chemistry between Eric and HYS. Overall, I would rec this drama to any fans of the four leads and to fans of rom-coms or darker rom-comes.

I give this drama a 7.5/10. Or a B-.

If you're a fan of Korean dramas - and unless you've been hiding out - you'll know the drama that's been going on with Spy Myung Wol this past weekend. Well, it's all settled now. . .sort of. Leading lady, Han Ye Seul has gone to LA. And, it has been decided that she'll be replaced by another actress, who may or may not be playing the character of Myung Wol. It's just like the stupid drama-within-the-drama: will they have Myung Wol die off screen? Will they have the new actress play Myung Wol? Will Myung Wol simply disappear? And, what of the other characters (and cast members)?

Well, koala, of koalasplayground.com has the story.

here )

Also, Lee-Kim Productions, the people making the show, are suing HYS for a cool 10 billion won (that's 9.27 million U.S. dollars) and contract charges are forthcoming. Her agency, Sidus HQ, will be participate as well. (I'm guessing they are also suing HYS.?)

So. . .Han Ye Seul's career is basically over. I feel terrible for everyone involved. It's clear things got out of hand. I hope HYS doesn't do anything more - like kill herself. Because, that could happen; her tweet makes it sound like she takes it all as her fault; when there was much more going on then we'll ever know.
walkwithheroes: [The Princess Bride] ([Z] You Were My First Love)
I have watched the first four episodes of the new Korean drama, Spy Myung Wol. The basic story, as listed on dramawiki, is this: a North Korean spy is given a mission; marry a top Hallyu star and have him defect to North Korea.

The mission is just as insane and weird as it sounds. Why go through all the trouble of marrying him? Didn't Kim Jong-il once kidnap stars to make a Korean film industry? I guess it has more power and makes them look better if the actor comes over on his own. Or something. The truth is, the marriage plan is just to cover ) Yes, the overall plot of the drama is silly and out of left field, but that hardly matters.

The real gold in this drama is the interactions between the four main characters and the stories that are forming between them. There is major back story with Myung Wol and Ryu - who seem to go way back, but try to act as professionally as possible. Then, there is Kang Woo and In Ah - they're co-stars and have known each other for at least five years; she has a major thing for him, too. Now, you have MW trying to get KW to fall in love with her. And, IA and Ryu are circling each other - she is majorly put out that he is totally unaffected by her. There are so many ways this love square could go. Already there are several new feelings bubbling to the surface. I can't wait to see where these love triangles go.

The verdict for this drama: it is awesome. Yes, the main plot is weird, but it works somehow. I think a lot of the awesomeness of this drama is the chemistry between the four leads and their interactions. I could just watch them all day.

Episodes 1-4 are out; and subtitles for all four episodes are available. The drama airs on Monday and Tuesday and is sixteen episodes long.
