I like 'em.
For Dream High, it's very much a coming of age drama. In many ways it seems aimed at teenagers-early twenties, what with the Idols and the singing and dancing. It's a bit like Glee, but with all Asians. (And not just the token 2) But, that's the thing, it's aimed for younger audiences, but its ratings are slowly going up. I think its because the storylines remind people of themselves. (What, you never had a sing-off in high school? A dance battle in university? A dance/sing battle at your work place? Just me then.)
The thing that makes Dream High enjoyable isn't the singing and dancing - though, they are nice - its the characters themselves. You have six different people, all learning and changing. Taking steps forward and backward to reach their goals. All while trying to really discover what it is they truly want. And, of course, along the way there are friendships and hints of romance. So far, I actually enjoy all the characters; I may not like them all, but I enjoy watching their storylines unfold.
Hye Mi - She's a rude girl, whose had everything handed to her. People have kissed her ass all her life, and that's over now. I really disliked her during the first two episodes, but I'm slowly warming to her. Because, she's becoming more human - more humble. She's finding herself and discovering her love of singing all over again. I love that she's starting to truly open herself up; is building a family, and friendships. I like her interactions with Jin Gook, Sam Dong, and Pil Sook. (Oh, and for her first acting gig, Suzy is doing really well. She's not blowing me away, but at least she isn't horrible.)
Jin Gook - He's cool and mysterious and protective. If I were a 16/17 year old girl, I might go for him. I love his feelings for Hye Min. The weird rivalry/bromance I can see developing between him and Sam Dong. I like that he wants to be the best, so he's trying. But, at the same time, he's also learning about himself and becoming a better person. Plus, I'm looking forward to learning more about his past.
Sam Dong - Aw. He's like the country child whose come to the big city to find his dream. He's a bit of a geek and a weirdo, but I like it. I love his crush on Hye Mi - it seems very pure and adorable. I like the way he's trying to protect her, and his small gestures of love are very sweet. I think he'll be the mysterious 'K' in the end, and that's great. Because, you can tell that a singing career is something he really does want.
Baek Hee - She started out so sweet! Or, at least, she appeared to be. I think she has a lot of built up anger and resentment toward the world (and especially Hye Mi), because of the years she's been forgotten and ignored by everyone. Its a bit All About Eve. I dislike the way she's suddenly all "EVIL! Bitch!", because she clearly was a decent person before. I cannot say I dislike her as a character, because I do find her interesting. I hope she is redeemed in someway, even if she and Hye Mi are never friends again, I'd like Baek Hee to say that she's glad they are rivals. I want her to sing because she wants to, not because she's trying to beat anyone.
Pil Sook: - I l love her. The make-up to make her look chubby was very distracting and bad, which I think is the reason she wasn't shown much in the first four episodes. Yet, the little bit we saw of her - it seems that Pil Sook is a really beautiful and child-like person. She wants to do well, and her voice is lovely. Plus, her crush on Jason is adorably sweet.
Jason - He's cool, relaxed, the best at everything, but doing it all for love. That makes Jason awesome in my eyes. I look forward to learning more about him. And, learning if his kindness toward Pil Sook is just "politeness and manners" or if he really does like her.
The adults all seem a bit useless at certain points, but this is a drama all about the kids.
As for My Princess - its shaping up to be a really well-written and well-acted romantic comedy.
Kim Tae Hee is brilliant as Seol - the character could be cliche, but she gives Seol humor and heart. Song Seung Hun - who knew he was funny? The two have amazing chemistry together, and I'm enjoying the way Seol and Hae Young tease one another, while dancing around all sorts of feelings - both good and bad. Jung Woo is a nice man, and I love the way he and Hae Young interact - it's like they are fighting over both women and yet. . .I sometimes wonder if they'll start making out. Plus, I love that Jung Woo is really fond of Seol and without Yoon Joo, he'd probably go for her. As it is now, he is slowly falling for her. Yoon Joo is a secondary, rich, bitchy woman of old, but there are hints of more under the surface. Or not - she's trying to get Seol to be doubted as the Princess. She's going to put Seol's adopted sister, Dan in the picture and she's talking to that fishy reporter. She's doing it all for Hae Young's money - which will be taken away as long as Seol is Princess. That bitch!
My Princess is a great show, and I'm slowly becoming addicted. Dream High is also an addictive drama. This isn't a good time for me to be addicted to dramas, and yet. . . I am. Crap.

Date: 2011-01-19 03:27 pm (UTC)I love the character dynamics (SO CUTE, SO ANGSTY, EVERYTHING I NEED BASICALLY) but the actual plot kind of does v. little for me. Maybe because all the meta goes right past me? I find it the conflicts fashioned a bit shallow for me. But idk. I love the prickly heroine.

Date: 2011-01-19 05:57 pm (UTC)Neither do I. Weirdly, I liked his better in Cinderella's Unni, despite the fact that he had very little to work with there. He is stated to be the Second-Lead behind Kim Soo Hyun, so I think they are relying on KSH for the acting talent.
The actual plot isn't all that new. It's pretty much every high school drama ever - with the losers trying to become the winners, in their own ways. (At least its the plot of every Japanese high school drama). What I do like is that HM started out on stop and is now at the bottom, you don't see that often. It is a bit shallow in the conflicts, but it is high school. Everything just seem a more important because its a performing arts high school - those kids love their drama and are always trying to out do one another. I'm watching for the characters, not so much the actual plot.

Date: 2011-01-19 06:29 pm (UTC)I so know what you mean! I have no idea why, maybe because he was more naive and doomed and that appealed to me? OMG, he's the second lead? Yay! It was fighting against *~childhood friends~* so I thought he'd be the endgame match, LOLL.

Yeah, this. The plot is harmless I guess, but basically they could cut the whole music school thing out and I'd be just as interested to see the characters interact.

Date: 2011-01-20 02:37 am (UTC)Maybe. I know I adored his naive and gentleness. I think he's the secondary, as everything lists the other boy as the lead. Of course, that doesn't mean Sam Dong will get the girl. Whichever one is 'K' will most likely end up alone.
The plot is pointless to me. I don't care who becomes famous. I just like the character interactions.

Date: 2011-01-19 03:31 pm (UTC)MP is so cute! I love the relationship between Seol and the guys. With Hae Young they've got this cute friendship that is starting to have some sparks of a romantic relationship. And Jung Woo seems like the cool older guy. He actually seems to be worthy of the affection that Seol has for him.

I agree 100% with all of this. Today's episode seems to really start things with Seol/HY, so I'm looking forward to watching it with subtitles.
