I finally went to see the very last Harry Potter film. The end of an era; and for many, the end of childhood. I have read all the novels and seen all the books. I've grown into adulthood with these characters. And, you know, I think I enjoy the films better than the books. I think it is because the films focus on only the important stuff - no subplots that are only for one book - and have had strong directors and crews behind them. So. . .what did I think of the last film and indeed the films overall?
The film was very much the second of a two-parter. While the first film had a lot of conversations and build-up, this one was like a third and second act - a lot of action and a lot of things coming together. This is the end, so things do have to be wrapped up.
Sadly, I felt somethings - like the deaths of Fred, Tonks, and Remus - happened much to fast. I know it battles, things happen fast, but these were such beloved characters. Their deaths deserved more than a shot or two in the film. But then, their deaths were also breezed through in the novel.
I also wish the afterward at King's Crossing had been a bit longer. In the novel, I thought it was rather cliche and even a bit 'fan-fic', but I would have liked to have seen more stuff with the next generation. (Also, how much do I love that Ron got fat?) Or perhaps more interaction between the Golden Trio and their kids? I'm not sure, I just felt like I wanted a bit more.
I love that they left in Neville's badass moments. Because, he really grew up during the series. I love his speech. I love that he killed the snake. And, I really liked that the film put in a bit of Neville/Luna, because they would be cute together.
I thought that this film was a great way to close out the franchise. It had some humor, action, and some really genuine and heartfelt moments between the characters. I think that, overall, this might be my favorite film in the series.
The film series itself was rather awesome. Someone said that it was the new Star Wars - no, that it was Star Wars to kids born between 1987 to 2000. And, you known, I agree a little. It is their childhood. It is that big series that they love so much. I was born in '84, and even I think of it as a part of my teenage years. I loved the novels and I loved the films (even if the middle films tried to go with the Hermione/Harry subtext; I've always been a Ron/Hermione fan, myself.) Still. . .I loved it all.
I loved this film. I adored all the novels and films. I'm sad to see it end. But, I am glad that, in the end, Neville got to be the badass we all knew he could be. . .
And that everyone lived happily ever after.

Date: 2011-08-07 08:25 pm (UTC)I also really loved a lot of the smaller moments in the film. I was so happy that they let Ron and Hermione each have a moment in Part 1 and 2. I loved McGonagall being badass, too. Plus - Neville. He will always be my hero. Dean got hot. So did Neville, actually. I also loved the little moments before the battle - Tonks and Remus; George and Fred; all the teachers getting ready. And the battle and the afterward - Luna and Neville sitting together; the quiet, bittersweet feelings of it all.
I liked the first Dumbledore. Or did you mean his brother? He was alright. I liked that he showed up for the battle.
And now I want to go watch it again.

Date: 2011-08-09 08:50 am (UTC)Hahaha, Ron's speech to Hermione when he came back after ditching them in the first film was SO SMOOTH, that was freaking adorable. Gosh, that implied Neville/Luna made me go awwww too, they'd be so perfectly, cutely weird together lolol.
No, I did mean Dumbledore. I just think this Dumbledore is too angry, haha, I feel like he should just chill out. He has some of the most impt scenes (like with the Snape thing or at the end at King's Cross) and I found his deliveries very dissonant to how I'd imagined it in my head. Oh well, though, different interpretations etc.

Date: 2011-08-09 09:09 pm (UTC)I loved Ron's speech. It was so adorable and honest. Neville/Luna. . .it should have happened in the books. But, JK didn't want to be cliche, with everyone marrying their high school sweetheart/crush.
The second actor to play Dumbledore played him more harshly, I think. The first Dumbledore seemed kinder and more sweet. The second actor played Dumbledore as a harder man. Which isn't bad, considering what is going on around him in his final years, but I agree that he needed to chill a bit.
