Hong Gil Dong aired its last episode today, and though I don't understand Korean, I did watch the episode raw. I think I'll go over the show after the subs are out for episodes 23 and 24 (ep 22s subs came out this morning). But, for now I give you my thoughts on the ending.
I have to say that this ending really did not feel like a Hong sis drama ending. It felt too dark and depressing. Maybe that was the point, because of the story and time period, but I still feel it was very upsetting. And CH killed the one group of people that more or less always believed in him. His character development went half way out the window! I say half, because he die cry, so he did feel bad about what he was doing. He hadn't gone totally off the deep end. Re the ending, the very end: In 2008. Did anyone else think the homeless man on the subway steps looked a bit like the monk? I think a better ending would have been to show everyone as their modern day selves, doing whatever. So, at least we get some kind of happy ending for them, even if it is 1000 years+. I'm sorry, but to me this ending wasn't even remotely happy. The gang was happy for what, 15 minutes out of an hour and ten minute episode?
I'm kind of disappointed that many Korean fans found the ending decent. To me, this was the worst and most rushed ending of a Hong sister drama to date. And yet, this show had the most episodes, so they could have worked with it! I kind of doubt the special will explain the ending, but hopefully at some point the Hong sisters, whom I'm disappointed in right now, will come out and explain it more.
I would have ended it: The big fire battle, then as the monk talks with the new little boy, we go into the town or near the palace, with a sign that someone's put up saying' Hong Gil Dong' (or something) lives', then we could see an arrow with a note flying into the inside of some noble’s home. After that, it could go to 2008 and we could see everyone, before heading to mordern!GD on the roof. That would have given me hope.
