Title: Outside, Inside
Series: Firefly/Serenity
Theme no.: 019. Another grey day in the deep blue world
Character(s)/Pairing: River Tam and Jayne Cobb
Rating: G
Notes (if any): Follows Should Have
Outside, the universe moves on, turning and breaking around the ship called Serenity.
Outside...
Her flesh is dying.
People are crying.
Worlds are slowly breaking apart...
It's all ending, but she's safe from it all...
As long as she stays inside her head.
'Cause inside, she doesn't have to be anything to anyone, she just gets to be...
River
.Title: New Day
Series: Firefly/Serenity
Theme no.: 021. New every morning
Character(s)/Pairing: River Tam and Jayne Cobb
Rating: G
Notes (if any): Outside, Inside.
Five months, three weeks, two days, ten hours, twenty-seven minutes, and forty-eight seconds.
That's how long River Tam's been drugged and locked inside her own head. Simon's not drugging her anymore, but...she's still not coming out.
Mal's taking to pacing the length of the passenger dorms.
Inara's stop taking clients, instead she's taken to reading to River.
Kaylee hardly ever smiles.
Zoe's even quieter than usual.
Simon's paler than usual, he hasn't slept in days.
Jayne seems to spend all his time lifting weights.
"She's...she won't come out." Simon says sadly, one late night.
He and Jayne are drinking in the kitchen. Neither is sure what to do or say anymore, at least when it comes to River.
"She t'inks she's safe." Jayne supposes, his eyes firmly locked on his glass. "River ain't stupid, Doc. She knows damn well w'at she did, an' w'at she can do...if they git 'er."
"But, they won't." Simon protests through a drunken hic-up. "We wouldn't let them."
Jayne pauses in deep thought for a long moment. "Mayhap she don' know that. Could be little River's gone so deep in t'at it's all runnin' t'gither...all one big day. An' she hears Cap'n yellin', Kaylee frettin', all t'at."
"Well," Simon slowly starts. "what can we do about that?"
Jayne smiles. "Let her know it's a new day, Doc. Let her know she's safe."
Title: Smells
Series: Firefly/Serenity
Theme no.: 018. The smell of hospitals in winter
Character(s)/Pairing: River Tam and Jayne Cobb
Rating: G
Notes (if any): Follows New Day. Ariel spoilers
River remembered smells best.
Mother smelt like fancy perfume that costs much more than it should have.
Father smelt like papers and ink.
Simon smelt like forever.
It was those smells that got her through...everything.
Now, on bored Serenity, she's found new smells. Grease, plastic, gun powder, sweat, fancy perfume that smells oddly motherly. The smells are nice, comforting.
River knew that's why she could still smell them, even when she was not with them.
If Simon smelt like forever, Serenity (and the people on her) smelt like home.

Jayne carried River's limp body to the infirmary, Inara and Kaylee nervously looked on. Carefully, almost uncharacteristically, Jayne laid the girl down. He gingerly fixed her arms and smoothed out her dress.
"It's okay." He told her awkwardly. For her part, River stared straight up.
From the doorway, Mal cleared his throat. "This gonna work?"
Simon moved past Mal, he looked nervous. "I have no idea. They used her brain as a rutting playground...and I can't fix that. But, I think I can fix this." He moved to his tools. "I just wish I didn't have to."
Jayne swallowed hard. "I t'ink we all wish t'at, Doc."

Kaylee smelt like grease and strawberries.
Zoe smelt like gun powder and the fading sent of Wash.
Inara smelt like motherly perfume that cost too much.
Mal smelt like stale faith.
Jayne smelt like sweat and smoke.
Serenity smelt like...home.
Serenity smelt like...winter: dead and full of men in blue gloves and masks. It was beginning to smell like a hospital...
River hated hospitals.
Her mind began to wonder, and she remembered...
Simon.
Ariel.
Only coal for Jayne.
OH...
Far away, she could hear the faint sounds of medical machines, feel the prick of a needle...Oh, it was nearly time.
It's time to wake up.

Date: 2007-01-11 03:40 pm (UTC)On a personal level, I have to say I adored the way you described each of the crew members by smell. Especially since Inara and River's mother seem oddly alike to her. That rang very true to both River and Inara's characters.
I'm really taken with these...

Date: 2007-01-11 09:08 pm (UTC)I wrote these and then posted them rather quickly last night. I think it took me about ten or fifteen minutes to write all three. So, I was mostly focusing on River and the characters around her.
What she's been through has left her broken and the rebuilding process is not easy.
That's very true. A lot of writers like to give River the 'quick fix' in post-Serenity stories...but, she's not 'fixed', she just no longer has the 'voices' of Miranda screaming in her head. I mean, the girl was broken, she had parts of her brain taken out...she won't be all sunshine and roses anytime soon.
Anyway, thanks for reading
