Promise
Theme: 17, A dark heart, beating
Character/s or Pairing: Jayne Cobb, River Tam
Series: Firefly/Serenity
Rating: PG-ish
Notes: I don't own them. Comes after "Fairy Tale" Spoilers for the film.
There must have been left over messages running over the Cortex. There must have been something that had caused her to go buggy on them. 'Cause Simon was so gorram sure that River wouldn't have done it on purpose. Simon was so smart, rarely wrong. He wouldn't be wrong about something as import as this, right?
Still, that hadn't stopped Mal, Zoe, and Simon from finding River in the middle of a dead group of Alliance soldiers, one of the soldier's hearts firmly in her hands.
Simon had approached her slowly, he'd called her mei-mei and asked if she'd like to go home. River had looked at her brother, her wide eyes feral. “Yes.” She'd whispered, so softly that Simon had barely heard her. “Yes...home...dwelling...where the heart is.”
Simon had gotten her to drop the heart. He'd taken her bloody hands in his and lead her back to Serenity, making sure River's eyes never left his.
When they returned, Simon was only a little surprised to find Jayne waiting, Vera firmly in the merc's large hands. “No, Jayne.” Simon told him, not unkindly. “No need for that.”
River's eyes flickered to Jayne for a moment. “Simon's going to kill me a different way today.” River's lips curled into a twisted and sad smile. Her eyes moved back to Simon. “It was beating before, Simon. It's stopped now. Promise.” Tears began to form in River's eyes. “Promise.”
Never Tell
Theme: 031. The currency of hope
Character/s or Pairing: Jayne Cobb, River Tam
Series: Firefly/Serenity
Rating: G
Notes: I don't own them. Comes after "Promise"
Jayne has hope, though he'll never tell anyone. He hopes that Zoe will find peace in Wash's death. He hopes that Inara won't leave again, Mal couldn't take it. He hopes that Simon never breaks little Kaylee's heart. He hopes he finds peace in Book's death. He hopes that...
Simon's had to drug River up. It's been months since River's been drugged up, and everyone had thought River was better. (She had promised to get better. Simon said she was better.) And yet...yet, River's drugged up in her room. Mal's pacing around, and he keeps asking Simon what he plans to do.
“It was just the Cortex. A trigger. It won't happen again.” Simon says it to anyone that will listen.
One night, about a month after the 'heart incident', Jayne slips a bit of money under River's door. “Git better an' I'll take ya t'buy a'ice planet.”
Jayne hopes that Zoe will find peace in Wash's death. He hopes that Inara won't leave again, Mal couldn't take it. He hopes that Simon never breaks little Kaylee's heart. He hopes he finds peace in Book's death. He hopes that River will take him up on his offer sooner rather then later.
Jayne has all the hope in the universe, though he'll never tell anyone.
