Heroes: Noun. People that get other people killed.

Book.

The people of Haven.

Mr. Universe.

Wash.

All dead because a few misfits and outlaws decided that the ‘verse ought to know the truth about Reavers. It wasn’t right that the crew of Serenity had had to become heroes, had had to become the semi-murders of so many people.

If only River Tam had never gone off to that school. If only Dr. Simon Tam had chosen another boat. If only Book had stayed save at the abbey. If only Wash had never taken the job aboard Serenity. If only Mr. Universe hadn’t been a nutter that liked the "Signal" over other humans. If only the people of Haven had settled elsewhere. If only…

The crew of Serenity were heroes to a lot of people. The crew of Serenity had carried the "Signal". They’d brought the truth about Reavers out to the masses. It was because of Serenity’s noble and brave crew of heroes that the Alliance was seriously being looked at as a bad choice of government.

It was because of the crew of Serenity that so many people were dead. It was because of the crew of Serenity that there would be another universal war that would kill even more innocent people.

Heroes: Noun. People that get other people killed.

The crew of Serenity were called heroes. The truth was, they were just a bunch of misfits and outlaws that got people killed.

The crew of Serenity may have gotten the truth about Miranda out, but there will be lots of large consequences, most likely even another war. And whose to say the Alliance would or would not win, again? Or that an even worse government would take control?

I feel the same way. Actually, most of my Firefly fic has something (even if it is just a throw away line) about the war that followed the events of Miranda and Mr. U's compound.
