"Won't you play with her? Don't you like her anymore? She'll be cross if you don't play her games." The fifteen year old girl spoke softly as she stared down at her 'playmate'.
For its part, the 'playmate'-who had once been a man-stared back up at her, his dead eyes wide with fear and his body covered in blood; a large and rather nasty looking hole was in the chest.
"She'll let you play the best parts if you play."
"R. Cobb!" The girl glanced back to see seven armed men enter the room. "Stand down!" The leader shouted at her. He sounded like he ruled over his men-she knew he hardly even ruled over his home.
"He doesn't want to play with Rayne." She told them sadly.
"Stand down!" The man repeated.
Rayne's responded by slowly dropping her sword and the dead man's heart. "You make her put the toys away." Rayne pouted. "Does she at least get a new friend to play games with?"
“Oh, I’m sure we’ll be able to find you a new friend or two.” A new voice said as the person it belonged to entered the room. Rayne whimpered softly and moved deeper into the room. “Don’t be scared, Rayne. It’s time for a shot.”
“Dr. Lemm has come to the party, but he’s brought bad gifts.” Rayne stated with a small whimper. “She doesn’t like the shots. They hurt her.”
Dr. Lemm nodded, as if he understood her perfectly. “Well, it only hurts for a moment. And if you don’t get the shots…” he trailed off with a knowing smile. “You don’t want that, do you?”
“No.” She glanced down at her bloody hands. “But, they all change her. She isn’t even a person anymore and it’s the shots that did it. Shots and stabs and opening to see what’s inside.” Rayne gave Dr. Lemm and the soldiers a strange look. “Tick tick tock goes the big bad clock.” She giggled madly. “Funny little clock with a pretty little face.”
Dr. Lemm’s brow was knitted in confusion, but he tried to let it not show. “Oh, uh, yes. Clocks.” He reached out a hand. “Will you come, now? Time for shots and then we’ll get you nice and clean.”
With a little sigh, Rayne wondered over to Dr. Lemm and touched his hand with her pale and bloody fingers. “Shots for growth please and thank you.”
He gave her a small and halfhearted smile before leading her out of the room. He had to get her back to the Academy before her last shot wore off.

“Pretty girl makes all the boys sing.” Rayne Cobb sung softly to herself as she danced around her room. She let one hand hold her stomach and she fingered the long and nasty looking scar she had given herself nearly a year ago. “Tick tick tock goes the big bad clock. She’s got two lovers and not one is the one she wants or needs. Planets and monsters are not right for her. She wishes they were one in the same.”
“Rayne.”
A huge smile spread across her pretty face and the girl whirled around to see the very dead Shepherd Book standing by her bed. “It’s you! She has missed you.” Rayne cocked her head to one side and gave him a little look. “Have you come to dance or have you come to show her more things? Will you be a teacher to her, again?”
“I’m not here to teach you or dance with you.”
“Then we can play a game.” Rayne suggested. “They are teaching her new games and giving her playmates. Nearly done with her, they are.” She got a far away look in her eyes. “They’re going to bring her a new and true friend. He’ll make her want to die, but he’ll be the only thing to keep her alive.”
“That’s what I’ve come about.” The dead Shepherd told her gravely. “There are people coming for you, but it will get worse before they get here.”
Rayne nodded her head sharply. “It usually does. She will be alright. No worries, Shepard.”
Shepherd Book smiled softly. “Just as long as you understand.” Rayne giggled to herself. “Alright, just as long as you know that you are not alone and that there are people coming for you.”
“She knows.” Rayne paused for a moment before giving him a sweet smile. “Shall we play and dance now?” Rayne reached out her hand and Shepherd Book took it. Together they danced a waltz; if anyone was to look into Rayne Cobb’s room, they would have seen her dancing with herself.
She was always alone these days.

It was the screaming that woke Rayne from her sound sleep. She had been dreaming of dirt and pretty little pools of blood when the screaming had started. A moment later, the screaming had brought new whispers into her head: Weak. Kill them all. Eat, rape, sew.
A little giggle escaped Rayne’s lips and she shivered in fear: “Reaver.” She closed her eyes and tried her hardest to ignore the new thoughts and the screaming. Dr. Lemm had a new playmate for her and Rayne wasn’t completely sure if she wanted this new playmate.

The next morning, Rayne was brought to the lab for a test. She was strapped down into her chair and Dr. Lemm’s strange and cold toys were attached to her head.
“You’ll dream.” Dr. Lemm began to explain. “I want you to do something for me. I want you to see if you can get into the Reaver’s mind.”
“She is nature’s child.” Rayne whispered softly, almost as if she was saying she was willing to do as he asked.
“Yes.” He glanced over at the three technicians. “Start her up, gentlemen.”
Something went through Rayne’s body and she mewed as her eyes snapped shut.

She was in Serenity’s cargo bay. It was all dusty and full of cobwebs, but it was still beautiful. Rayne wondered if Shepard Book would join her, as he often did. If he joined her, they could play a game and she could pretend she was a person. A noise caught her ear and Rayne turned to see a Reaver standing by the stairs.
“Hello.” She told him politely. “He is a Reaver? He is the Reaver they brought last night?” The Reaver did not answer, though Rayne knew he wouldn’t. “She is Rayne. Does he have a name?”
“No.”
A voice inside Rayne’s head answered. She frowned a little. “Sometimes, Rayne forgets her name. Mayhap, Shepard Book will give him one. Would he like that?” The girl moved closer to the stairs and the Reaver. “We could see if he is in his room.”
“No.”
The gruff voice repeated in her head. “No Shepard.”Rayne nodded. “Fair enough. Reaver is not a man of faith.”
“Man?”
She gave him a little look. “That is what he is, a man. Reavers are men, just a bit removed from society.” Rayne reached out for him. “Pretty scars. Touch them, please?” The Reaver did not move or growl, he just stood perfectly still as Rayne placed a hand on the side of his face. “Pretty, burn scars.”
The Reaver actually seemed to try and smile. “Soft girl. Smells like blood and flowers.”
Rayne returned the smile. She showed him the scar on her arm and then lifted her shirt to show him the scar on her stomach. “See? Pretty scars for us both. Pretty little scars that protect us.”
The Reaver leaned his body into Rayne’s and before either knew what was happening, he had buried his face into her smooth neck. “Mine.” The Reaver nipped at Rayne’s neck. Rayne let out a little gasp that was a mix of fear and pleasure. “Mine, now. Pretty little virginal skin that’s mine.”
Rayne placed a hand on the back of the Reaver’s head and let him nip and bite at her neck. “We’re friends, now? You’ll eat her all up one day, just like the big bad wolf.”
The Reaver just made noises in his throat as he began moving over her neck, biting and tearing at it. He held onto Rayne’s waist and held her tightly against him. Rayne didn’t even try and fight as the Reaver pushed her to the floor of Serenity’s cargo bay; she didn’t even try and fight as the Reaver began to rape her to death and eat her flesh.

In the lab, Rayne let out tiny gasps and only began screaming when Dr. Lemm had her awoken from her dream connection with the Reaver.
One more thing: Check out the new entry for a teaser of my new Firefly series. :)

You know, I didn't start off thinking she'd be this freaking, but...Rayne is such a freaky girl. It's a bit scary.
Glad you liked it, though. :)

Me: Bill, what ya think?
Bill: Doable. How about 'Ghost of a Rose'-Shadow thinks of Rayne during her two years gone. Rayne has twisted dreams of Shadow while on a 'misson' from Dr. Lemm?
Me: Okay. Thanks, Bill.
Sound good?
