Theme: 9. Four twelves are forty-eight
Character/s or Pairing: Jayne Cobb and River Tam
Series: Firefly
Rating: PG
Notes: I don’t own them. No spoilers.

She had asked Simon for a seeing eye dog and he had bought her a math text for a graduate program in the Core. It wasn’t really Simon’s fault, because Mal had a rule about pets. And Mal’s others rules were broken more then anything else, so it make sense that the Captain would put his foot down about a dog. In the end, River decided not to make a fuss about not getting her dog. Instead, she curled up in the sitting area of the dinning room and opened her new box.

Over at the table, Jayne was cleaning his knives. Everyone else was occupied with daily chores, but Jayne didn’t seem to mind being alone with River. River knew it was because they were now friends, even if Jayne would deny it if asked.

River looked up from her book and gave Jayne the once over. He really was a simple and yet completely interesting character. Jayne was full of regrets and sadness and pride; the poor man actually thought he was the hero of his own story. Jayne didn’t know that he was just the Hero of Canton.

“Jayne?”

Jayne didn’t even look up from Blinky. “Yea?”

“Do you have a favorite number?”

Jayne snorted. “No.” He glanced over at her. “That’s a buggy question, Girl.”

River stared at him as she spoke. “Simple question; there were no bugs in the question.”

The mercenary put his knife down and gave her question some serious thought. “Twelve.” River looked at him and Jayne shrugged. “I got my first gun at twelve.”

River smiled cheerily. “Twelve is a good number, Jayne.” She took her book off her lap and gracefully stood up. Before Jayne could blink, River was standing innocently beside him. Jayne just made a noise and started to go back to his knives, well until River spoke again. “What is twelve times four?”

Jayne groaned. “Yer the gorram genius, you should know.”

“But, if you tell me, it’ll be better.” River said in a low voice. “If you tell me, it’ll be better.”
She repeated. “Anything we do together will be better. Just once, please and thank you.”

“Uh…” Jayne’s blue eyes narrowed on her chocolate ones. “ya comin’ on ta me?”

She cocked her head to one side and gave him her classic ‘well duh’ look. “Twelve times four is…what?”

“Forty-eight?” Jayne guessed.

River beamed at him. “You get a prize!” With that, she leaned in and gave Jayne a kiss on the side of his mouth. “Happy?” Jayne just dumbly nodded. “Four twelves is forty-eight. All important numbers.”

She happily skipped back over to the sitting area, picked up her book, and started reading again. Jayne sat in his chair for a few seconds, before he stood, muttered: “I’ll be in my bunk.” and took off toward his room. River didn’t look up from her book, but she did smile to herself as Jayne disappeared into his room. Such a simple and yet such a complex and interesting character, completely worth exploring.

Love this line...HEE!

Very cute and I like that Jayne actually picked up that River was flirting with him. One little thing, he should get a prize, not price.

And *happy sigh* all he needs is one little kiss on the side of his mouth from her and needs to go to his bunk...*g*

:) Thanks. Yup, River has started the flirting and (finally!) Jayne is getting what's going on. Of course, now he's off to his bunk... ;)

Crap, off to fix price to prize.
