It wasn’t suppose to go down like this. In every possible way that Jayne had imagined his death, he had never imaged this. Death by starvation was not the way he wanted to go; it wasn‘t even manly and dangerous.

Serenity had sprung a leak , had run out of fuel, and had been forced to do an emergency landing on some moon with a name Jayne couldn’t pronounce. Wash had landed Serenity, and that was the only good part. Apparently, it was only the other side of the moon that had people on it. That wouldn’t have been a bad thing, but both shuttles had suffered damage and couldn’t be flown that far without crashing.

Basically what all that meant was that the crew of Serenity was going to starve to death in a matter of days. Even with the food supply and Kaylee, Wash, and Book working round the clock to fix one of the shuttles, the chances of everyone living was slim. It really wasn’t fair that the girls and Book got first crack at every piece of food that was found.

“Sharing is caring. Sharing is caring.” Jayne turned to see that River had come wondering into the cargo bay and was singing to herself. She was also carrying a cup of milk and a large, red, and all too juicy looking apple. “Sharing.” She stopped a few inches from his workout bench and stuck her hands out; offering him the milk and the apple. “Caring.” She told him cheerfully.

Jayne gave the food and drink a untrusting look. She wouldn’t poison him, would she? Slowly and maybe a little awkwardly, Jayne got off of his workout bench and took the offered cup of milk and the apple. “Figured ya’d share wit’ Simon.” Jayne thought out loud as he stared unsurely at the food in his hands.

River gave a little shrug. “An apple a day keeps the Reavers away.” She offered Jayne an unsure smile.

Jayne returned the unsure smile and downed the milk in one gulp. He set the cup down on his bench and took his favorite knife out from its holder. River was watching him with all the interest of a scientist; Jayne thought he kind of liked that she found him so interesting. With a movement that would almost be considered graceful, Jayne cut the apple in half and handed a half to River. The girl took it with another unsure smile.

“Don’ go tellin’ nobody.” Jayne warned, though not unkindly. He stuck his half of the apple onto his knife and took a bite. River was holding her half like it was precious to her. “Eat it or I take it.” He told her, his mouth still full.

River glanced up at him through her eyelashes. “Lair.” She told him simply. She took a small bite of the apple. “Save precious things for later.” She explained to him as she tucked the rest of it into her pink skirt’s pocket.

Jayne gave a little shrug and finished his half before speaking again: “Ya didn’ give Simon any food?”

With a ‘duh’ look, River answered him: “Gave Simon a cup of milk and bread; Kaylee gave him her apple.” She let out a little sigh. “Simon didn’t notice the hidden meaning. Eden, Adam, Eve.” River laughed to herself. “Eden, Adam, and Eve don’t make sense. The entire human race couldn’t have come from just two people; even if you incorporate the fact that they had five children.” She gave Jayne a serious look. “Noah’s Ark is also a problem. As is the birth of Christ.”

“Shouldn’ talk like that.” Jayne advised her. “Little girls ought not talk like that. T’ings ya don’ understand.” River gave him a look and Jayne ducked his gaze. “Forgot ya knows every’ing.”

The girl shrugged again. “I took the universe to husband.” She stated in a matter of fact tone. Glancing around her, she seemed to suddenly become sad. “I should be stars; you can’t take the universe to husband and not be stars.”

Jayne rubbed a large hand on the back of his neck and tried not to say something to upset River. He didn’t understand her, but he was starting to see that her words weren’t always pure nonsense. “Yeah.” That was what he settled on and that seemed to be the best he could do.

Apparently that one word was enough for River, as she nodded slowly. And then, River lifted her gaze and looked at Jayne. This time, she didn’t look at him like a scientist, no she looked at him in a very different way. River Tam looked at Jayne Cobb and seemed to see much more then anyone else had ever seen; she looked at Jayne and saw him.

Jayne ducked his gaze away from hers for a brief moment, but when he looked up, she locked her chocolate eyes with his blue ones. And that was when Jayne saw River. He didn’t see River the crazy girl or River the reader or River the killing machine or River the genius or River the little girl; no, he saw her. Seeing her scared and thrilled him more then anything ever had before.

She gave him a sweet smile. “Can’t take the sky from us, Jayne. We’ll touch the sky and the stars before the sun goes to sleep.” She giggled softly to herself and did a little twirl before practically dancing out of the cargo bay.

Jayne watched her go, long after she was gone. He was growing awfully fond of River and he knew part of it was the way she looked at him. River didn’t look at him as if he were a stupid man or just a mercenary, no she looked at him like he was the best thing to ever come into her life.

This was a lovely moment between them. Hope they get the ship fixed and escape before the food finally does run out.

I'm really fond of little and lovely moments between characters, so of course I just had to write one with my favorite OTP. And don't worry, they'll be off the ground and in the sky before you can spit. Not that I think you spit... :)
