Shades of River

Theme: 1. Five shades of white
Character/s or Pairing: River Tam and Jayne Cobb
Series: Firefly
Rating: G or K
Notes: No spoilers from the show or the film.

Jayne Cobb noticed lots of little things, but he never told anyone that he noticed them. For example, he never told anyone that River Tam was five shades of white. Her skin, her smile, her favorite dress, her movements, and her soul-they were her five shades.

He first noticed that her skin wasn’t pale, but a milky white, on some backwater planet ‘bout six months after meeting her. She was sitting just outside Serenity, watching the crew unload cargo. River was moving her lips, but no words were coming out and Jayne wondered if River was just talking to herself or if she was reading their minds and whispering their thoughts to herself. She had looked up at him as he pasted her and she had whispered in a sing-song voice: “Jayne is a good boy. Jayne is a gentleman. Jayne is a prince. Jayne is a thief and a liar and a lover.” And she had smiled at him; Jayne had stayed away from River for a whole week after that.

He noticed her smile three weeks later. The crew had been sitting around the table, all eating dinner and doing the usual things; laughing and talking over one another. Suddenly, Wash started a story about a planet he had visited once, it had ended with a hilarious joke about a pilot, a preacher, and a pair of school girls. The whole table had erupted in laugher. It was then that Jayne noticed River’s smile; he had seen her smile before, but this time it was different. River’s smile was bright and huge. River’s smile brightened up the room and made Jayne feel oddly warm.

A week later, while the crew was on Angel, Kaylee and Simon got together and bought River a thin white dress. It looked more like a nightgown then a dress, but River seemed to adore it; hell, she wore it two days in a row. Jayne decides that the dress is the color of snow after River cuts her leg on a piece of metal. Rich, red, blood streams from her long leg and strains her dress. As Simon cleans his sister, Jayne hears her say: “Snow White is bleeding and now her snow blanket is covered with red.”

If people’s movements were colors, Jayne is sure River’s would be white. Mal says white is actually a shade, but Jayne still thinks River movements are white. Her movements are just too graceful to be anything but white. Her movements are graceful and beautiful and those of a born ballerina. Sometimes Jayne watches River move through Serenity and sees her beautiful movements; yeah, the girl’s movements are white and pure.

A week later, River asks Jayne: “What color is my soul?” Jayne doesn’t answer her, he just groans and marches away. Later that night, Jayne Cobb sits in his bunk and thinks about River’s question. The girl is as crazy as anything, but she’s sweet and intelligent and she’s got a purity about her. River’s soul as a white and warm light. It’s a white light that warms his soul and makes him wish he were a better man.

Squee. Thoughtful!Contemplative!Jayne. Great descriptions.

Red is a good color for Jayne. River agrees, it is strong, it is angry, it is bold, it is brave, it is barbaric...
and it is romantic. *flees before Jayne finds her after posting that*
