walkwithheroes: [Being Human] (Cling to Dear Life)
[personal profile] walkwithheroes
I was quite surprised to see that the fourth series of Being Human had started this week. And to such little fanfare on the BH groups at LJ.

We start off the new series a month or so after the end of series three. Nina and George's baby has been born and the Old Ones are heading toward Europe.

It's interesting to note that this fourth series has a whole new vibe to it. The first three series focused on our vampire, ghost, and werewolves just trying to survive. Fighting those primitive urges and just being human. This series has a more serious tone, a more 'this is war' tone, that in a way makes it feel like a new show.

We start off the episode with a flash forward to 2037. The vampires have taken over most of the world and a small band of humans fight in a rag tag resistance. Their leader appears to be a blond woman, who may or may not be the baby of George and Nina.

We then head back to Barry to find Tom working at a restaurant and we learn that Nina was killed two weeks ago by a vampire gang. Tom, it seems, is looking for the killer. At the old hotel, George has turned the attic into a cell fr the baby. Home made crosses fill the room and he spends his days wide awake, stake in hand, staring at the attic door. This is not the same George that said he was ready for war last series. This is a George who has been in war and who has been broken.

Switching over to a vampire hang out, we see that the vampires are preparing fr the arrival of the Old Ones. They are making plans as if it's the start of a new world war. But, as one young looking vampire - Cutler - points out, the world has changed a lot in fifty years. It's smaller now and countries - people - are more ready to fight against something if it affects all of them. But, the other vampires more or less ignore him. They also state that they plan to kidnap the baby - as a gift.

Tom goes to see George and Annie. He tells George that he knows which vampire ordered Nina's death and he knows where he'll be that night. It's the full moon, and George thinks it's a shady deal; however, he agrees to go with Tom.

We next meet new vampire Hal, who lives with his old werewolf friend Leo. Leo's got a barbershop and he, Hal, and ghost Pearl live above the shop. It turns out that Leo isn't transforming so well, and he (and Hal) believe his body is giving out. He may only have a couple of more months before the transformations kill him.

On the way to kill the vampires, George tells Tom how Nina died. The day after the baby was born, she went to get something from the shop down the road. She was covered by vampires and dragged into an alleyway, where she was beaten to death with bats. We also learn an interesting fact: werewolf blood kills vampires.

The two enter the warehouse where the vampires are supposed to be, only to find it empty. They've been set up.

Back at the bed and breakfast, social services shows up. The enter the house and find the baby. The police offer with the social worker turns out to be a vampire. He warns Annie not to follow, or he'll kill the baby and the social worker.

Back at the warehouse, George begins yelling at Tom for bringing him into a trip. With the moon rising, they'll never make it back to the house - so Annie and the baby are alone. Tom tells George he didn't mean to do this, he just wanted to impress George and Annie. He's lonely and wants a family again, like he had with McNair. George screams that he isn't Tom's father. Tom responds: "You're nobody's father."

The baby is brought back to the vampires and they all wait for her to change. Only she doesn't.

The next morning, Hal and ghost Pearl find Leo nearly dead.

George and Tom find Annie crying - she tells them about the kidnapping. Tom swears he'll find the baby, but before anyone can say more, the police office that took the baby calls for George from outside. The trio head outside and are told that the baby didn't change. She was meant to be a gift. So, since they are now gift-ness, they'd like George to be the gift for the Old Ones. After all, he killed John Mitchell. In exchange for George, they might give the baby back to Annie and Tom. George agrees.

Back at the vampire hideout, George is tied up in a cage. The Vampire Recorder (yes that is his real title) tells the others that the first vampires were two brothers from Asia, who made a deal with the Devil. They would live forever in exchange for blood. After that first drank blood, they have 5 dreams that have become prophecies. One of them was that a human child would be born of two werewolves. And that this child would destroy all the vampires in the world. VR believes George and Nina's baby to be the one. The vampires decide to kill her, even though VR says that it must happen - the baby must destroy them.

Meanwhile, Tom and Annie have tracked down the vampire that led Tom and George into the trap. The vampire explains that he only lied to impress the older vampires, but they treat him horribly. He agrees to bring Tom and Annie to where George and the baby are.

The VR doesn't want the baby to die, so he makes up a long and crazy ritual, trying to buy time. George is told by police office vampire that they are going to kill his baby. Distressed, George begins to stare at a picture of the full moon, willing himself to change. Back in 2037, a missing piece of the three piece vampire scroll (the one about the baby) has been found. The leader of the humans reads it and then asks a trusted solider to kill her. . .

Tom and Annie enter the warehouse and begin staking vampires, as George escapes from his cage. He isn't fully werewolf, but he's not George. In the chaos, VR escapes with the baby and George kills the leader of the vampires. Annie comers VR and he tells her the baby must live, because she is the 'War Child'.

Annie brings the baby to George and tells him he's saved his daughter. George tells them (Tom, Annie and VR) that he tricked his body into tranforming. The VR tells him that's bad, because there is no full moon. His body won't be able to fully transform and without the moon, his major organs are shutting down; he won't heal. He must transform into a werewolf to save himself, but he can't fully transform without the moon. So, he's dying.

Back in 2037, the Leader of the humans tells her solider it's okay. (He can see her, and I believe he is a werewolf)

In 2012, George has Annie promise to take care of the baby. He has Tom promise to stay with Annie and the baby and to protect them from the vampires, always. George finally - really - looks at his baby and he tells Annie and Tom "Eve. She's called Eve." He dies. George's ghost appears behind Annie, and she asks him to stay. But, he tells her its the end of his story. "I have to be with my Nina." :( Annie begs him, saying she can't lose him too.

At the barbershop, Pearl and Hal sit together. She asks him: "What are we going to do?"

Back in 2037, the solider asks his leader: "What are you going to do?" She turns from her door and replies simply; "I'm going to save the world."

In 2012, George smiles, "She's going to save the world." He walks through his door.

In 2037, the leader says firmly: "I'm going to kill that baby."

In 2012, Hal tells Pearl they need a miracle.

Crying Annie turns to Tom; "So this is how it starts."

So. . .I loved it. I think the writing is still brilliant, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what the new characters bring to the table. And we have a huge mysterious story line with the baby and what we saw in the future. I can't wait to see how series four pans out.
