Which drama should I watch?

For the first time in a long time I have a very light drama watching schedule. I'm really just watching A Thousand Kisses, Flower Boy Ramyun Shop, and Vampire Prosecutor. For the first time in ages, my schedule is so free, because subtitles for each drama come out slowly. And, because I've finished with everything for the semester - all I have to do is look for a job. . .and wait for interviews.


There are several different dramas I'm thinking of starting, but I'm unable to chose. So, I was wondering what my flist thinks. Should I watch:

Man of Honor
Tree with Deep Roots/Deep Rooted Tree
Warrior Baek Dong Soo
something else you'll tell me about in comments

I do like a good mystery and a bit of romance. I heard it was a bit slow to start. Would you rec I start with the first episode or skip some?

The first 2 episodes are a necessary evil, though they are not bad at all! I just found the young version of Jang Hyuk's character grating, but you shouldn't deprive yourself of the brilliant acting of Song Joong Ki...maybe some ff-ing would do :)

Ah, thanks for the tip. I download the show, but use the ff button. I wouldn't want to miss SKJ. :) Oh, I have to ask: Does Jang Hyuk get the girl this time?

Personally I've really enjoyed The Empress. Its kind of a trashy romance novel in Kdrama form but there have been some good cliffhangers every week.

Isn't that a remake of Joyotei with Rosa Kato and Shota Matsuda? I think it is. And, that was a cheesy and trashy Jdrama. I may look at The Empress. Where are subs available, please?

Its a different take on the story. I haven't seen the Jdrama but I think from what I've heard about that that the Kdrama is a LOT different. The Kdrama is dark and a little trashy but its tons of fun. Subs are on Viikii.

The Jdrama was so darn cheesy, but fun. Dark and a little trashy? That's a weakness of mine when it comes to Kdrama. I'll stream it. Thanks for the rec!

Warrior Baek Dong Soo. I haven't finished it yet, but so far it's my favorite drama this year. I can't work up an interest in either of the other 2, though I'm DLing Tree, so I guess I'll watch it eventually.

Is WBDS slow? I remember hearing it had a really slow start. I love what I see in the MVs, though. I want to watch it, so I'll give it a go.

I found the first episode a bit slow, but it's important backstory stuff, and I basically fell in love in the second episode, and not just because it introduces what may be my favorite new OTP of this year. Aside from the first episode, though, I haven't found it slow at all. The first 12~ episodes are held back a bit by the RL historical events it uses and trying to adhere to that plotline, but it really takes off after that, especially when the main character comes into his own bigtime. They aren't bad by any means, but you can tell the writers are aching to go to the next stage and cut loose.

I think the problems a lot of people had were the pacing of the romantic plotlines (I think they're just fine? But they aren't a main focus. I don't find them slow so much as not as prominent as we're used to in kdramas. More your average cdrama level.) and because the preferred fandom pairings didn't look like they'd be endgame (I admit, I do prefer the same pairings among the 4 mains as most het shippers? But I like what they went with a lot too, though it took a while to win me over. But the one thing that bugs me about the show is that the early episodes really are written to make you expect the alternative.)

i'd say it's really a hybrid of wuxia and a trad sageuk in fusion sageuk dressing. It also has what are probably the best choreographed fight scenes I've seen in a kdrama (there's one scene where we suddenly get a serious closeup of the swords and we see that they're covered in nicks and scratches, and you normally just don't get that kind of detail, since most shows are concerned with the weapons looking impressive, not like they actually get used), and while I do get a bit bored by scenes with the main villain, I think the conversations people have are fascinating, regardless of the context.
