Story Title: Simon Turner
Story: Surely Someday
Summary: Simon Turner discusses his new life and meeting Andrews and Maggie
Author's Note: This is a new series that I've started working on. All information can be found in the link above. I'm going for something a bit more supernatural, though there will be human drama and a little romance and comedy, too.
United Kingdom, 2005:
I had a plan.
A good plan. I was going to university. I was getting out of the estate; I wasn’t going to end up like my family. I wasn’t going to be a drunk like my dad, a drug dealer like my sister, or in jail like my brother. No, I was going to be someone. It was going well, until France. Fucking France.
I went for a gap year, traveling around France and Italy. It was in France that I was attack – left for dead. The police said it might have been a large black dog. I was put into hospital for three weeks. And, on the twenty-eighth day since my attack . . . I felt the need to go. I wanted to go outside – I took a taxi and a bus until I ended up in the wilds of France.
It was like something was taking hold of me. Something came out of my throat, it wasn’t a sound a human would make. . .it was the sound of an animal. My hands became gnarled as I stripped off my clothing. I could feel something happening inside – my bones were breaking, twisting, and bending. It felt as if my all my organs were failing at once; like my brain was nearly exploding inside my skull. Another strange noise escaped my throat. My skin was turning into fur . . . I was becoming a monster.
I was a monster.
Going home, I found myself a new man. My senses were heightened; my urges were beyond compare . . . I wasn’t Simon Turner anymore. I was a monster, a thing of legend.
Until one day . . . I woke up in someone’s back garden – naked and hugging the dead carcass of a deer. There was a man, all stern and noble standing above me; he said his name was Douglas Andrews.
Inside his tiny home was a girl. She was small and pale, beautiful. She looked into me and I looked into her, and that was when I knew. I was a monster, a legend. But, she . . . this girl, this Maggie Quinn, deep inside her, well . . . she held the stuff of nightmares.
*
I live with them now, Andrews and Maggie. We live in a tiny little house, under the radar. Andrews and I work as “sanitation engineers” at the local university. When the Wolf comes out, I have a deep dark basement.
Looking at it, I’m not who I wanted to be. I should have died. Instead, I’m the monster; the scary thing in your closet. The stuff of legends is called Simon Turner, and he’s the Big Bad Wolf.
