walkwithheroes: [The Princess Bride] ([Film] Golden Sparrow)
[personal profile] walkwithheroes
I'm developing the project more and more. The idea of the project is to explore how different cultures portray people dealing with death or a loss (of innocence, divorce of parents, a country, losing an important realtionship, that sort of thing). I don't want the project to be too long, so I'm currently narrowing it all done. But, I must ask: if anyone, after reading this last paragraph, just has a scene (especially from films) that pops into their heads, please let me know.

I'm putting up what I've decided to use:

United States:

- MST3K's Hamlet
- South Park - deaths of Kenny
- Buffy's Body episode clips

United Kingdom:

- Romeo and Juliet's death scenes from the 1968 film.
- A trailer for a Frankenstein play
- Doctor Who - Nine regenerating into Ten; Ten into Eleven
- Life on Mars - Sam jumps

Japan:

- Battle Royale - trailer, video of woman introducing the game, and a couple of deaths.
- Soredemo, Ikite Yuku - Hiro's mom's speech about the way she's felt since Aki's death; Futaba's breakdown with Hiro by the lake where Aki was found. (ep2 and ep5)
- Code Blue's SP - final speech.

Korea:

- My Girl and I - Soo-eun's final goodbye voice over.
- Gloria - the suicide attempt.
- Giant - scenes when the siblings are separated during their childhoods.

France:

-Je vais bien, ne t'en fais pas - the trailer

Taiwan:

- Mars - the revile of Qi Luo's rapes.

China:

Still looking. . . thinking wuxia scenes.

OHOH! I just thought of something: Farscape, 3.22, Dog With Two Bones. The last few minutes are heart wrenching -the scene where Aeryn has to decide if she stays or goes and there's a coin toss. But anyways -this is a scifi, mainly Australian-produced show. However, Ben Browder is not Australian so people may wonder xD
OR
You could go with the more prominent loss scenes -death in 3.15 Infinite Possibilities: Icarus Abides. It's also the last few minutes, I believe.

Not sure if this is down your alley, but it came to mind.

Oh! I love Farscape, and I hadn't really thought about using it. But, I think there are many scenes in season three that would work. Thank you for reminding me.

Oh, I thought of one - in Taiyou to Umi no Kyoushitsu, a schoolgirl is about to commit suicide, talking about "becoming a star" or something, and her teacher talks her down from the ledge by telling her that death isn't beautiful, it's just death, etc etc.

I remember thinking it was a really revolutionary scene coming from suicide-happy Japan.

That sounds excellent. Would you happen to know what episode that scene was in?

The first thing that popped into my head when thinking about loss of innocence was Yoo Ah In's movie "Boys of Tomorrow". Especially the character Yoo Ah In played (Jong Dae) and his gradual maturation/loss of innocence due to circumstances. A very nice, bleak film. And maybe "Into the White Night", the k-movie version (haven't seen the jdrama and jmovie yet).I think "Into the White Night" deals with premature/forced loss of innocence.

I'll check out that film, thanks.

I think I'll use the Japanese drama version of "Into the White Night", because I really loved it. You should check it out - much better than the Kfilm.

Sorry to intrude, I actually found your blog via a video search on google and this project intrigued me (your videos are all amazing btw!)

Uhm, I dunno if this is quite what you had in mind but there is this USAmerican movie titled "My Life" with Micheal Keaton and Nicole Kidman. It's about a man dying from cancer and his wife is about to have a baby so he in the midst of him preparing himself to die, he also makes a series of tapes about things the child should know growing up, like how to shave and throw a fastball, etc. The ending scene is quite beautiful and I think really drives home what the whole movie is about.

You aren't intruding! I'm glad you like my videos. :)

"My Life" is totally what I'm looking for! If I can find the trailer or clips, I'll use it. Thanks so much for being the film to my attention.
