It's May Madness!
After months of crime dramas, serious dramas, melodramas, teen dramas, family dramas, etc - trendy romantic comedies are back in full force on Korean television. The month of May is full of new trendy romantic comedies, each more trendy than the last. I've watched three of these dramas and thought I'd give some spoiler filled thoughts.
Baby-Faced Beauty - I haven't watched this one. Because, the female lead bothers me for reasons I've never been able to figure out.
Lie to Me - It's a cliched, by the numbers, been there, done that type of drama. I've seen these characters before, I've seen this type of contract marriage drama before. The storyline is something I've seen before. It's cliched. You can see where its going episodes before it gets there. And, we're only on episode two! But it is saved by its two leads, Kang Ji Hwan (who could have chemistry with a rock) and Yoon Eun Hye (who is slowly but surely becoming an awesome actress).
Best Love - It's standard Hong Sister fare. It has the trendy rom-com storyline and situations. But, it takes them and turns them on their heads. It has mature actors and actresses, which means no one is acting like a cartoon. Yes, they are, at times, a bit immature, but it is still believable. You can see these people, you like these characters. And, I love the way it looks at the way actors, actresses, and idols are made and formed by agencies and public opinion. I'm liking this one.
Romance Town - I have yet to watch it, but I will because of my love for Sung Yu Ri (loved her in Snow Queen, and still have a soft spot for her) The cast for this drama is very good, and I hope they explore the severing class of Korea. We always see the maids and drivers in the background of Korean dramas, so I'm looking forward to seeing the family maid as our leading lady. It's written by Seo Sook Hyang who wrote Pasta and The Lawyers of the Great Republic of Korea, which makes me think this drama will be your standard trendy rom-com, ala Lie to Me. At least the actors and actress in this one (like in LtM) are good and charming.
The rom-com madness will continue in June. Later this month, some romantic dramas will also appear. It's a great time to be a fan of romantic dramas.

Date: 2011-05-12 05:37 pm (UTC)Best Love is so cute!! The characters really bring a lot to the drama. BL has managed to rise above some its cliches and I'm always waiting for the next episode!
I'm really excited for Romance Town as well. It looks like it could be good. And Sung Yuri! LOVE that girl!
BUT I'm still standing by Can You Hear My Heart as the best drama of the season.
BTW Annie is so cute in your mood theme, just seeing that little jump made me giggle :)

Date: 2011-05-13 09:28 pm (UTC)Best Love is one that I am really enjoying. Yes, there are a ton of cliches, but the lead characters - and even side characters - are enjoyable.
I watched the two RAWs of Romance Town - very cute.
I count CYHMH as a family drama, and it is certainly shaping up to be a really solid one. I've seen all 12 episodes with subtitles and really like where the writer is going with things.
Thanks - Annie is one of the most adorkable characters I've ever seen. I love her.

Date: 2011-05-15 12:32 pm (UTC)Its so much fun! Its always really sad when the episode is over. And I"m looking forward to this weeks eps because it looks like he's going to go for AJ. What a concept of having the male lead actually fall first and early on in the drama!!!
So so cute! Its so different from what else is out there right now.
Me too, I'm really loving it. I'm going to be dying to find a good dvd set of it when the dramas all done! I have faith that the story will keep up its pace and continue to be interesting.
Me too :) I'm so behind on Being Human episodes!

Date: 2011-05-15 07:34 pm (UTC)I am so surprised that he's fallen for her so early. But, I love that it seems AJ is going to reject Jin. I love that, because he's this massive star who gets everything he wants and she basically tells him that she doesn't find him attractive or something.
I think CYHMH is going to be a favorite of 2011.
S3 was such a roller coaster of emotion. It started out so fun and ended in tears. It was rushed, but it was still much better than S2. S1 is still the best in terms of storyline, I think.

Date: 2011-05-12 06:23 pm (UTC)The other 3 I haven't really watched yet so I'll keep an eye for them. I think I'll like Best Love because it's the only one that really stars mature and established actors (at least IMO).

Lie To Me really is a walking cliché. I hope it gets better, it would be such a waste of the cast otherwise.

Date: 2011-05-14 06:47 pm (UTC)I'm loving Best Love. I'm so glad its as adorable as it is. I agree about LtM - it's a walking cliche, which is a shame because the cast is so good. I'll keep an eye on it, because I want it to get better. I watched the first episode of Romance Town and am already addicted. I'm also watching some Japanese dramas - it's a good season for romantic/romantic-comedy dramas.
