A Good Day For the Wind to Blow is a daily Korean sitcom that airs Monday thru Friday on KBS1. It airs at 20:25 o'clock and is the usual daily sitcom fare - a show about a middle class family and a plucky girl who changes them. Or something. The show is described as a romantic family sitcom and so far it is living up to that.

The thing about daily sitcoms is they last 100+ episodes, with each episodes being between thirty and thirty-five minutes. It's a bit like watching five or six seasons on an American sitcom, only instead of watching over a period of five/six years, you're watching over a period of five or six months.

The basic plot of A Good Day. . . is the story of nineteen year-old Kwon Oh Bok who dreams of become an illustrator. Despite hardships (her mother died when she was young and her father is a bum whose always leaving her in debt)Oh Bok remains very optimistic. One day she meets Jang Dae Han and sparks fly. At first they dislike each other (it is a Korean drama), but they end up working together and slowly a connection and mutual respect grows into something more. Sadly, things aren't that easy for them due to a multitude of reasons.

Dae Han also has two siblings and their complicated love lives and search for what they want to do in life make up the show's side plots.

Oh Bok and Dae Han:

Let's start with Oh Bok and Dae Han.They meet in episode one and by episode twenty it becomes clear there is an attraction. Dae Han is the team manger in the product department at Well-Being, a food company. Through fate - Oh Bok befriends Dae Han's younger brother (though the three of them are unaware of the connections) and Oh Bok decides to apply for a part-time job at Well-Being. She gets the job and is put in Dae Han's department. The annoying 'Old Timer' that's been 'stalking' her becomes Oh Bok's boss.

In episode thirty or so Dae Han admits to liking Oh Bok - to his grandmother and mom. By episode thirty-five Dae Han and Oh Bok are dating. There are some issues, however. Dae Han is thirty years old and the father to a seven year old boy called Dok Rip. As fate would have it, Oh Bok actually befriends Dok Rip before knowing who is father is. Dae Han has never been married - he got his college girlfriend pregnant - and still lives with his parents and grandmother. Everyone is concerned with the couple's age difference and the fact that Oh Bok could end up the mother to someone whose only twelve years her junior.

By episode forty-five, Dae Han, Oh Bok, Dok Rip, Min Guk (Dae Han's younger brother), and Sol Ji (Min Guk's best friend and Oh Bok's roommate) are aware that Dae Han and Oh Bok are dating. When Min Guk tells his older brother that it isn't fair for him to date Oh Bok, as she's young and may think they are 'just dating', Dae Han tells Min Guk that he's serious about Oh Bok. Basically the dude is dating Oh Bok with marriage in mind.

The truth is Oh Bok is mature for her age and already treats Dok Rip as a beloved younger brother/son - she cooks meals for him, plays with him, etc. It annoys me a bit that most of the characters - even the ones I like - kept telling this couple that they shouldn't date because they are nine years and some-odd months apart and because Dae Han already has a son.

Especially when you consider the fact that Dae Han's blind date from episode twenty-something - who was in her late 20s - suggested that Dok Rip "go live with his mother until junior high". It's not how old a parent is, but how seriously they take the job. Besides, Oh Bok wouldn't be the youngest mother in history. Plus, the age difference is not that huge.

Of course, the age difference and son aren't the couple's only issue. Dok Rip's birth mother, Mi Ran, has returned from America after seven years. She's befriended Oh Bok - not knowing that OB knows Dae Han - and Mi Ran's made it her mission to "get back" Dae Han. You know, despite the fact that she left him seven years ago. [Side Note: Seriously, what is up with women in Korean dramas assuming their ex-boyfriends wait for them for years?]

If you're wondering about Mi Ran abandoning her son, well. . .that's a long story. Basically, after she gave birth her parents lied and told her that she gave birth to a baby girl who died shortly after being born. Mi Ran didn't bother seeing Dae Han so they could mourn together, instead she allowed her parents to ship her off to America. Meanwhile, Dae Han found his son at the orphanage and took him - agreeing to never tell Mi Ran their baby survived. Shady stuff that will most certainly come back to bite all of them in the butts. I don't think Mi Ran or Dae Han are blameless in this as they both allowed themselves to be used and manipulated by Mi Ran's father.

Man Se and Sang Jun

Man Se is the youngest of the Jang siblings. Early on she meets Sang Jun, who just so happens to be the only heir to the Well Being company. Sang Jun is charmed by Man Se and before you can say: Evil mother-in-law Sang Jun is telling his parents that he wants to marry a 'nobody'.

Sang Jun's father is really nice and his mother - who also happens to be Dae Han's boss is a royal bitch to Man Se and her family. When it looks like the two will have to break up, Man Se and Sang Jun (geniuses that they are) decide to lie and tell everyone that Man Se is pregnant. Thus, the two are married - and Man Se enters hell.

It's a Korean drama and Sang Jun's from a rich family, so of course his mom is horrible. But this woman is just so awful - she wakes Man Se up at five everyday and has her learn four languages, cook meals, learn all sorts of pointless things, etc. Man Se hardly gets any sleep and every time she does something Sang Jun's mother finds fault in it and yells. Honestly I'd slap her. Yelling: why am I stuck with an idiot daughter-in-law like you? in front of the whole family is just beyond rude. At least the father-in-law is nice.

I'm just worried what will happen when they find out Man Se isn't pregnant. I've spoiled myself a bit from soompi and it seems that Sang Jun will be forced to divorce Man Se. :(

Min Guk and Sol Ji and Kang Hee

Min Guk is the middle of the Jang kids and is roughly twenty-five. He's the usual middle kid in these types of dramas - despite a high school diploma and college degree he's got no job. Apparently he goes listlessly from job to job , because he really wants to run a business or invent things. But, his family tells him it's useless, so he just wonders around.

He also has a bit of a problem - he's in love with his high school teacher - whose twenty-six years his senior. Oh, Min Guk tries to pretend he's not in love, but he is. His old high school teacher, Lee Kang Hee, now runs the school Min Guk's nephew attends and she's friends with his parents. So, Min Guk runs into Kang Hee at every turn.

The thing is, Kang Hee, was married during Min Guk's high school years, but her husband disappeared a few years back; Kang Hee believes he's still alive and though she feels Min Guk's emotional love for her, she can't bring herself to let those feelings reach her. Plus, there is the fact that she taught him when he was fourteen years old and the fact that Kang Hee is old enough to be Min Guk's mom and she's friends with his parents. So, yes, I can see why Kang Hee would be uneasy about forming a romantic relationship with Min Guk.

Meanwhile, there's Sol Ji. She's been Min Guk's best friend since high school and she's in love with him. Sol Ji is a tomboy so Min Guk goes around calling her a 'dude', something which annoys and hurts Sol Ji. Sol Ji is an orphan, so Min Guk and Kang Hee are like Sol Ji's family - she thinks of Kang Hee as a mother figure. Which is why Sol Ji never lets on that she knows about Min Guk's feelings nor does she try and make Min Guk forget her.

From spoilers it seems that Min Guk and Kang Hee actually do start dating, but break up. So, Sol Ji will put aside her feelings to try and get them back together and happy. It makes me feel horribly for Sol Ji. With Min Guk and Kang Hee, I'm not feeling that Kang Hee actually loves Min Guk back, but we'll see how that goes.

Ki Chul

Is Oh Bok's childhood friend/stalker. He's very protective of her, almost to the point of obsession. So far he hasn't done much, but we'll see where it goes.

My feelings on this show are very simple - if you fast forward through the boring parts - it's a rather addictive little show. It's a fun little thing. Actually, it reminds me, at times, of American/British soap operas - lots of sweet moments among twists and turns and weird 'WTF?' type moments and plot turns - and totally addictive.

Still, I'm mostly watching for Oh Bok (Kim So Eun - Boys Before Flowers) and Dae Han (Jin Yi Han - Who Are You?) and their adorableness. It's good because I can watch two-four episodes a week and it only takes me an hour.

At this point I do rec it if you're in the mood for sweetness and a touch of angst. But, after episode 90, we'll see if that rec changes.

You can get it at am-addiction.com. Bit of a warning: like most daily dramas it starts off a bit slow, but the pace picks up after a few episodes. Currently there are 60 episodes with subtitles.
