I caught up with the last two episodes of Doctor Who today. I have to admit to really loving Flesh and Stone, but being slightly underwhelmed by The Vampires of Venice.
I'm not saying that The Vampires of Venice was bad, because it wasn't. In fact, it had some really great one-liners and had some nice insights into the Doctor and his relationships with his Companions. The thing was the episode was, well, boring. Flesh and Stone had a lot going on and was very much an 'edge of your seat' type episode - lots of drama. To go from that much drama to something more low-key was just jarring.
Flesh and Stone:
Likes:
- Amy/Doctor. They were very 'shippy this episode and I enjoyed them.
- The counting! So very creepy.
- Octavian's death. That was done really well and I loved what he said to the Doctor about being at his best at that moment.
- The light and the way the soldiers forgot each other.
- Amy, eyes closed, walking through all those Angels. I held my breath.
-Bringing back the crack and having someone finally notice it.
Dislikes:
- River. Song. She was better in this episode - more 'old friend' (bit of a Cap'n Jack thing going on) and less of that 'I'm your true love and know everything - but I still don't like her.
- The Doctor's freak out and anger. It's totally understandable. But, I still find it strange that the Doctor is the one freaking out all the time.
So, overall I did really enjoy the episode. It was an adventure and it made me really see the chemistry that the Doctor and Amy have. I can't really 'ship them, but that's mostly to do with Rory. Which is a bit odd for me, because I could 'ship Nine/Rose and that was when she was still dating Mickey.
The Vampires of Venice:
Likes:
- The Doctor coming out of that cake and his line about Lucy the stripper waiting outside.
- Rory's phone call to Amy and his Stag party tee-shirts. (Side note: Does anyone else find it strange that Amy wasn't having a Hen's night? Does Amy even have any girlfriends? Or friends? Other Companions like Rose and Donna have mentioned friends or family members, Amy has just mentioned an Aunt and Rory.)
- Amy and the Doctor acting dorky because OMGVampires!
- Rory's speech to the Doctor about the way Companions forget things with him. And, the way Companions do crazy things to impress the Doctor.
- The girl's father wearing Rory's shirt. lol.
- Rory and Amy pretending to be related to get Amy into the "school". I also liked: "Uncle. . . Doctor"
- Amy calling the Doctor and Rory her boys. Rory saying they aren't. The Doctor saying they are. (Cute!)
Dislikes:
- I found the plot a bit boring and predictable. Of course they aren't vampires. And, the moment they focused on the water I thought: Alien Fish People
- The weird guilt trip that they tried to lay on the Doctor. Seriously? Is he supposed to save every world in the universe?
- Some of the acting from Isabella and her dad was, eh.
- Amy not really seeming to care about Rory at times. Nearly forgetting him at some points. And, wanting Rory to be her pretend brother. . .it's as if she doesn't really love him at all. With Rose, there was guilt and the feeling that since they had been together for years and because he was 'save' she wanted to keep it going. You got the feeling she did love him, but couldn't let go. With Amy, it's like there were two guys in her village that were in her age range and Rory was the straight one, or something.
Basically, I adored Rory in this. He's adorable, even if he is a bit slow. He really is the sort of guy you marry and have a sweet (albeit boring) life with. I just thought the plot of this episode was dull and not even the one-liners, the hard truths from Rory, and the cut interplay between the characters could save it.
