I finally sat down and watched the second disc of Romance of Red Dust, which had episodes six thru ten. I know it's still fairly early in the series, yet I cannot help being slightly underwhelmed. The actors are all playing their roles well, the sets are nice enough, and I see a lot of potential in certain things. But, I can't help feel that their is something off. Maybe it's Chu Chen near Mary-Sue-ness? Or the quick pace of some storylines and the slow pace of others?
I think a lot of my issue is with Che Chen, actually. We're ten episodes in and already half, if not more than half of the male cast is in love with her or at least seems to be in love with her.
She has Li Jing, who is already devoted to her. He even asked to marry her in episode six. He's very sweet toward her, and I honestly think Li Jing is the first person to actually be nice to Che Chen - to like her for her - since she was a child. That's why I think she mainly agreed to the marriage at first - because she thought she was going to die and he was so kind toward her. I don't doubt Che Chen has feelings for Li Jing, I just wonder if they are as strong as his feelings for her. I think this could be a case of chemistry between the two actors - it's there, but it's not enough to make me (as of yet) buy that they are deeply in love after such a short time.
Che Chen also has Zhang Lie. Now, he has a wife and I'm sure it's meant to be more brotherly/sisterly than anything else. But. . . I'm getting some weird vibes from the two when they are together. (Li Jing is also slightly jealous.) But, I'm just getting something from their scenes, like perhaps Zhang does have feelings for Che Chen. She certainly seems slightly wary of being alone with him for too long. But then, I may be reading too much into this.
And, then there's Junior Master, who has a real name, I just haven't bothered to learn it yet. Well, he's gone after Che Chen (whose run away) and seems a little obsessed. I mean, just a little. And, it seems like Che Chen also has/had feelings for him at some point.
Seriously, Blue Assassin Lady had it right: "Che Chen, Che Chen, Che Chen."
In other plot lines, I'm a bit interested in just what Che Chen's old Master has done to his son. Making him a 'War Slave' seems like code for "Childlike crazy person." I'm oddly fascinated by the newly childlike/crazy guy and what Yellow Dress Assassin (who has a name, I will learn it) are going to end up doing. It's been made clear that YDA is more or less looked down on by others and she's looking for revenge, but she also seemed to have a soft spot for the son before he was changed. Plus, it's now her job to take care of him, so you never know what they are going to do there.
I'm also loving the two new characters we met toward the end of this disc: the girl who saved Li Jing from the water. (I loved her, "Call me General!" when one of her guards started to call her princess.) Plus, there's the "bandit" who seems to be a bit of an idiot, but. . . he talks big, so I'm hoping it's not all talk.
