Schools were supposed to, in theory, make a person smarter. You learned things in a school. That's what they were built for, after all. Only sometimes...schools weren't schools and they turned little girls into weapons.

River Tam's fourteen when she goes away to school.
She's fourteen when she begins to go insane. Her mind slips away slowly, and there are times when she doesn't remember...anything.
Who am I?
Where am I?
Simon...
Will I still be allowed to dance?
Simon!

When you're slowly going insane, you tend to try and make yourself feel better by inventing things. Comforting sounds, peaceful places, other people...
My side, your side.
My side, your side.
Will you dance?

He's very odd, maybe even insane, and he's got a mask over half his face. Still, River thinks he's very handsome.
Vaguely, River half-remembers something about an opera whose main character wore a similar mask. She forgets about it almost a second after she remembers it.
River smiles at him, and it's enigmatic and sad, and he returns the smile in almost the same way. “Are you a spirit?”
He shakes his head, but River can't tell if he's confirming or denying her question. “Stark.”
“River.” She pauses, tilts her head to one side, and smiles ever so softly. “Stark and River. Names that aren't for people that...aren't.”
Names for people that...aren't.
Stark thinks he likes that. Awkwardly, for there is no other way for him, Stark reaches out, putting his hand on River's. “Are you afraid?”
River nods, her cold hand grips his tightly. “Chairs, Academy, two by two...hands of Blue...two...”
“Shhh.” Stark presses himself closer to her, his lips brush against her forehead. “Not here, safe here...in the room, with me.”
He holds her quietly, his lips brushing against her forehead, her cheeks...her lips. River's lips taste like tears and honey, they remind him of past lovers and for a moment Stark is blissfully happy.
“It'll get worse,” River tells him in a whisper.
“I know.” Stark pulls River against him. “But, I'll be here.”
She pulls away from him, thoughtfully she reaches out and touches his mask. “Am I dreaming?”
The faintest hint of a smile crosses his face. “We all are.”
