I can't comment on the fact if it is OC-ish or not as I don't watch OC California (if that is what you mean with OC).
I love the story. Even though it is sad, it is also very uplifting. It give you the image of two spirits being together after a long time of being lost. And I love the fact that Akira sees his act as not ending his life but some sort of marriage to Nobuta (the fifty/sixty year reference) - together they'll watch over Shuji. Akira is such an erratic yet very sensitive kind of person that with the right incentive (and Nobuta is always the right incentive) he would do such thing.
