Here it is: a new thing for fanfic writers.

The Fanmix Series:

In which a writer takes twenty songs, at random, from their song list and writes twenty fics (ranging in length from 100-however many you want words) from any Fandom they wish. Crossovers are allowed-go crazy. My Fandom-’Firefly’

First-

All I Wanted

by Jody Friedman

Pairing: Mal/Inara (post-Firefly and pre-Serenity)

All I wanted to tell you

Is that we’re not far apart

Though there may be oceans between us

You’re close to me in my heart

Inara was gone and Mal was bitter. It wasn’t something that was talked about, but everyone could tell that Mal was one unhappy Cap’n; he yelled at everyone, took dangerous jobs, and spent a lot of time in his bunk. Not even Kaylee’s cheerfulness could bring Mal out of his funk.

It wasn’t that he was mad she had left, it was more like he was mad at himself for not getting her to stay. If he had just said something sooner. If he hadn’t slept with old best friend. If he hadn’t let her on the ship in the first place, well…none of anything would have happened between them. There would have been no duels, no banter, no trunk that he couldn’t bring himself to open, no Mal and Inara.

It was just painful to know that Inara was just planets away. If he hadn’t been such a coward, Mal would have gone to her and tell her everything again, only this time he’d add those three words that he could never bring himself to say out loud.

Truth be told, she was in his heart and he couldn’t get her out. He could just get used to the knowledge that she was inside his heart and always would be. And no matter how much he wanted it, Inara Serra would never step foot on Serenity again.

"And no matter how much he wanted it, Inara Serra would never step foot on Serenity again. Talk about irony! Nice story, and I can't wait to read more mal/inara from you.

Thanks so much. I loved the irony of it, myself. I'm writing 20 fics in the Firefly 'verse and I'm sure a few more will be about Mal and/or Inara. :) This was my first real fic about them, so I'm glad it is okay.

Inara was gone and Mal was bitter.

I love this summary. *g* It's so.. all-emcompassing!

Truth be told, she was in his heart and he couldn’t get her out.

I love this, too. Like a stain or the burned bottom of a frying pan. I can just imagine him scrubbing and scraping and then hurling the whole thing into a corner, pouting. "It won't come out, I've tried!"

Short and bitter-sweet and lovely. :)

:) Thank you. That line just came to me and I thought: That's so Mal/Inara!

:) Thanks.

Totally. Because, you know Mal has tried to stop loving Inara and he just can't stop. She's in his heart now and there is no turning back.

Short and bitter-sweet and lovely. :)

Again, thanks.
