Theme: 10 One true thing
Character/s or Pairing: Jayne Cobb/River Tam
Series: Firefly
Rating: G
Notes: I don’t own them. Also, according to the shooting script for ‘The Message’, Mattie is Jayne’s brother. No spoilers.

Jayne murdered people for money. It wasn’t something that he tried to hide or play off; he was a mercenary and it was his job. Jayne was good with knives and guns and he knew it, that’s why he took the job. He wasn’t smart or anything and he had never been good at family raising, so he only had had three choices as a young man: farming, mining, or mercenary work. Mercenary work had seemed to fit his personality just fine.

Now, years later, he was spending a beautiful Sunday afternoon not killing but doing arts and crafts. Jayne was gluing a teacup back together for a little crazy girl. The two of them sat at the table in the dinning room and carefully put the pieces back together with some glue borrowed from the doc.

“Jayne is doing so well.” River told Jayne as she peered over his shoulder to stare the tiny teacup that was nesting in his large hands. The girl had her china doll sitting in her tiny lap. “Don’t you agree, Ling?”

“Dolls can’t talk.” Jayne growled under his breath. River pressed her body closer to his arm. Jayne nearly fumbled with a piece of the teacup, but caught it before it fell. “Talkin’ crazy is goin’ make this harder.” Jayne quickly moved his chair away from hers.

River just rolled her eyes and looked away from him. They were silent again, as Jayne worked on the teacup and secretly wished that he had gone on that job with Mal and Zoe or gone into town for supplies with Wash, Book, Simon, and Kaylee. And since when did Simon leave his beloved mei-mei alone with the big bad man-ape?

“Progress report?” River asked cheerfully a few minutes later. Jayne nearly jumped, but ignore her after he recovered. “Progress report?” River tried again. She gently kicked his leg with her bare foot. “Progress report!”

“Girl!” Jayne angrily glanced over at her. “I heard ya the first time. When I’m done, I’ll hand it ta ya.”

River gave him a look. “That is not what she inquired. She inquired on how far the task has progressed.” Jayne gave her a look that was pure confusion. “Progress, a word meaning: advance, develop, or improve.”

“Oh!” Jayne’s eyes widened a bit and he nodded to himself. “Ya want ta know how its goin’. Nearly done, sugarplum.”

The twosome paused for a moment. Had Jayne just called River ‘sugarplum’? Jayne Cobb had just called River Tam ‘sugarplum’. Sugarplum, a term of endearment.

Jayne nervously cleared his throat and went back to the cup. River put her doll on the table and moved her chair closer to Jayne’s. He responded by moving his chair farther away from hers. This little game went on until there was no more table to move to, so Jayne just stood up. River did the same and before Jayne blinked, she was at his side and watching him fix the teacup.

“Did you ever help your brother, Mattie, fix things?” River child-like voice whispered softly.

Jayne didn’t even look at her. “Yeah, sure. Mattie was always breakin’ his go-se.” Jayne chuckled to himself. “Now he’s a gorram miner an’ its his job ta fix the equipment when it breaks.”

River smiled fondly at a memory that had just popped into her head. “Simon used to get confused with the biology of plant life. He always asked why a doctor had to know about plants.”

Jayne let out a small laugh. “Got ta remember ta ax him ‘bout that at dinner.” He looked down at the tiny teacup; it was all done. “Here ya go.” He handed River the teacup, which was now glued together.

River beamed up at him. “There are no missing pieces. It’s cracked and it shows, but all the pieces are there. You fixed it, Jayne!”

He rubbed a hand on the back of his neck and tried not to blush. “Weren’ nothin’.”

It’ll always be in repair, but you made it better.” River told Jayne softly.

This time, Jayne did find himself blushing slightly. “It weren’ no thing.” He told her awkwardly. “Now, git! Go put the teacup and the doll where they can’t git broke.”

River offered him a brilliant smile before she floated over to where her doll was, as she picked the doll up, she looked over at Jayne: “You give me so much. You‘re true, Jayne Cobb.” With that, River left the dinning room and headed off to her room.

When River returned to the dinning room a while later, she found Jayne, his guns, and her math text waiting for her. Jayne simply shrugged and said: “Thought ya could do some math while I clean my guns.”

River happily curled up in a chair beside him and they spent the rest of the afternoon cleaning guns and doing math problems together.

I absolutely adore the whole chair-shifting thing. HEE!

AND the fact that he didn't run and hide after he'd said something nice.

Thanks. I love that image as it played out in my head. Btw: I hate to be needy, but your Rayne mix link doesn't seem to be working when I paste it in my brower. I think it's...I'm not sure what it is, but I'll keep trying.

It's a total Rayne date, which makes it the best date ever.

Very sweet. And though it's been said already a thousand times-- I loved the chasing with chairs bit. Great stuff.

The lovely thing about Rayne is that nothing they do is really all that normal. Honestly, the only reason Jayne called her 'sugarplum' was because it seemed to have a nice flow within the sentence. However, it could make a nice nickname. You know, I didn't really notice they were having another math date until just now. lol.

Well, the chasing with the chairs is priceless. You can just see it happening in your head and, at least for me, it's something to smile about.

:) Thanks a lot. The chair "dance" is something I really liked seeing in my head; I could just see it playing out on screen.

Well, if I can find the "right" screencap I might give it a go...been kinda thinking of extending the asking for quotes from stories posted here for the comm to making a bit of an icon challenge, ie, take all the quotes offered up and some screencaps and ask people to go wild with em..*g*

I think that would be great; an icon challenge with quotes from fic used.
