People were blind in lots of different ways, River knew that. Sometimes people were blind to others or to events. River was blind to reality. Simon was blind to Kaylee’s advances. Captain and Inara were both blind to the love they had for one another. Zoe was blinded by her loyalty to Mal. Wash was blind to Zoe’s want for children. Everyone was blind to Book’s past sins. And Jayne, Jayne was blind to his own feelings.
“Blind, we’re all blind.” River whispered softly. She was sitting in the corner of Simon’s room, moving her hands nervously. “Likely to crash and die. Blinding and leading and falling. We‘re all just falling. Float on.”
“Hey?” River looked up to see Jayne standing in the doorway. “Ya okay?”
River stopped moving her hands and slowly nodded. “We’re all blind.” She told him softly. She watched him for a moment to see if he understand; Jayne gave her a small nod. “It isn’t right.”
“Nah, it ain’t.” Jayne agreed. He paused in thought for a moment. “I’d rather be blind then deaf.” Jayne told River. “ ‘Least ya’d be able ta see ‘em comin’.”
From her corner, the girl gave Jayne a look. “You’re already blind.”
“Am not!” Jayne make a face; when did he start talking like a six year old? “I can see jus’ fine, girly.”
River raised an eyebrow. “Are not. You are blind, Jayne Cobb.” She sighed to herself and softly spoke: “We all are. All blind and floating. Leading one another through the black.”
After thinking about that for a moment, Jayne had to agree with her. “Can’ say yer wrong. Good thing we got ya.” He gave her a half-smile before heading off to the cargo bay.
River was silent for a moment. The ship had her, but she was blind too. Of course, no one else noticed; no one even knew they were blind. River made a mental note to ask Simon if he would buy her a seeing eye dog; River already had a name picked out-Cobb.
