China Doll
When River Tam had been a child, she had begged her parents for a china doll that had sat neatly in the window of Capital City’s biggest toy store; it was all she wanted for six whole years. River’s parents had told her that the doll was a foolish thing and that she was eight and much too young for something so fine and much too old for dolls. Six years after spotting the doll, River turned fourteen and ended up at the Academy. For some odd reason, never getting the china doll was River’s biggest pre-Academy regret.
And maybe that was why she was memorized by a toy store window one afternoon. Sitting politely in the toy store window was a tiny china doll; all dark hair and big brown eyes. The doll was dressed in fancy black shoes and a beautiful red dress. It looked so much like the doll she had wanted years before.
“Shiny.” River whispered to herself. “Shiny, red, beauty.”
Beside her Book and Jayne glanced over at her. Book offered her a grandfatherly smile and Jayne just snorted.
River turned to the two men and gave them a sweet smile. “She’s waiting for a friend.” The girl put her tiny hands on the toy store window and locked her eyes on the doll. “Shiny.”
“Yea, w’atever.” Jayne muttered as he fixed the crates he was carrying. “We gittin’ back ta the others or w’at?”
Book glanced over at Jayne and then back to River. “River, the doll is very nice. However, we should be getting to the meeting point.”
The girl gave the two men sad eyes and an even sadder smile before taking her hands off the window and following Book. Jayne took one last look at the toy window before following the preacher and the crazy girl.

“River?” The girl glanced up to find Simon standing in the doorway to his room. His hair was slightly wet and he was holding his bag, the one he always brought to the bathroom. “Are you ready to go to bed, mei-mei?”
River nodded and got off of Simon’s bed. She followed him across the small hall and waiting for him to slide her door open.
“Oh!” Simon stopped dead in his tracks, causing River to run into him. “Oh, River…” The doctor entered the room and River followed him. “What is this?” River looked over her older brother’s shoulder to see the china doll from the toy store sitting on her pillow, a note in the doll’s lap.
River moved past her brother and picked the doll up, she hugged the little thing to her and smiled widely. Meanwhile, Simon had picked up the note and was reading it out loud:
“A china doll for a baby doll.” Simon glanced over to River; he didn’t know the
handwriting and the note was written on a card from the toy store. Simon put the card down. “It must have been written by someone at the store. Who do you suppose got you the doll, River?”
River ignored Simon as she crawled under her covers and put the doll under the covers beside her. “She needed a friend. A friend is trying to be known.”
Simon looked a bit confused, but decided that it must have been a gift from Book or Inara. No other crew members could afford the china doll; it had cost more then one of the crew members would have made in months.
“I suppose.” Simon shook his head and gave River a kiss on the forehead. “I’ll talk with Shepard Book and Inara in the morning.” He gave River a smile before leaving the room and sliding the door closed behind him.
Alone in her room, River smiled. Her new friend had bought her the one thing she had always wanted; in the end, he would give her everything she ever wanted.

Down in a bunk, on the other side of the ship, a man called Jayne played his guitar. He had spent all his whore, cigar, and beer money for the next half year earlier that day. Somewhere deep inside, he knew it had been worth it.
