Followed you over from dangermousie and I have to say, I agree with everything you've written. I have no patience for HS and no sympathy either - it's one thing to say that EJ 'stole' everything and makes HS look bad in comparison, but you know what HS could have done? ACTUALLY, ANYTHING. It doesn't seem like she went to uni, she has no skills outside of ballet (and doesn't seem to be that good at it anyway; she never practices and we saw back before the timeskip that she expected to be given first place without having worked for it) and all she does is drink (EJ having to pick her up doesn't seem to be an isolated incident) and fool around with boys!
I think these episodes have made it clear that EJ does care
EJ repeatedly reached out in her own stunted ways - her words of truth at the beginning of ep 5 are designed to make HS wake up to herself, she smooths the blanked over HS when she thinks she's asleep, and while you can argue that EJ choosing HS for the marketing campaign is to save money, I think it's more properly informed by her wanting to have HS actually doing something with her life. I also find it interesting that EJ is clearly clever and yet is easily persuaded by HS saying that she and KH are dating - I feel that usually she'd see that for the lie it is, but she's blind when it comes to KH, and a little bit soft towards HS.
I can't respect HS. At best, I can feel for her when her bewilderment takes over and she wonders why she's acting like this, doing things like this, but she'll never be the sister I root for. For all that EJ made her that way, the potential had to be in HS from the beginning - if she were truly the paragon of perfection some people believe her to be we wouldn't be seeing these cracks in her facade.
