Strange Hero Yi Zhi Mei (eps 19-22)
Strange Hero Yi Zhi Mei continues to be the best wuxia my f-list isn't watching. (Why, f-list?! WHY?)The show - like many wuxia series - has "mini" arcs, with an overlapping series long arc.
With episodes nineteen-twenty-two, we finish up Xiao Mei's family mystery and start with a series of flashback episodes.
The flashback episodes tell the story of how Ge Xiao met Ying Wu Qiu and Ru Yi. The flashback episodes are book ended with a story going on at "Yi Zhi Mei"'s home. The present storyline starts with Tutor and Ge Xiao telling the story of how everything went down five years ago; and, later - they are attacked by Wu Qiu and his men. This gives GX and WQ a chance to talk and discuss how they both saw how things went down five years before. These are the episodes were we get to see how GX "fell from grace", how WQ became the man he currently is, and how Wu Qiu and Ru Yi met and traveled together before they both met Ge Xiao.
It's interesting to get more back story of GX, Tutor, and WQ. And, it's nice to see some character in Ru Yi - because, she's been so "pure and loyal and boring" up until now. Though, I confess it's a bit late for me to truly care for RY as a person.
Anyway - here is what I liked:
- The fact that they didn't go (completely) supernatural with what was happening with Xiao Mei.
- Xiao Mei got to be such a detective and a bit of a badass during his family story arc, and I'm so happy about that. Because, it's about time Ma Tian Yu had more to do.
- The shipper moments between Ge Xiao and San Niang continues throughout these episodes. I'm glad they are finally going with it, without stopping. No, they won't be making out anytime soon (this is an adventure wuxia), but - the writer is giving us one or two moments per episode.
- I love how much like siblings Xiao Mei, San Niang, and Hu act - especially when they are begging Tutor to tell them stories.
- I love the back story with Wu Qiu; because, I've always felt a little sorry for him. So, to see how he became who he is - it's brilliant. His heartbreak of Ru Yi loving someone else and only thinking of him as a brother. His heartache at knowing that he isn't the strongest or the best. . .I don't know, I feel for the guy. Is he a horrible person? Yes. But. . .knowing that he was an alright person before he and Ru Yi met Ge Xiao - that gets you thinking.
Anyway - just some thoughts. I'm loving this drama and can't wait to watch episodes 23-30. (I have episodes 23-26 downloaded and waiting for me.)
