Sungkyunkwan Scandal eps 1-2
This is a drama that I've had mixed feelings on for a long while. While I liked the premise: fusion-period drama with a touch of Hana Kimi; plus, the previews made me think of Hong Gili Dong, Hana Kimi, and even a little bit of Goong. Still, I wasn't sure if this drama was for me. I wondered if it would take itself too seriously or it it would focus too much on comedy and forget its historical aspects. The fact that the male lead, Micky Yoo Chun, hadn't really acted before didn't help matters. Despite my nervousness, I watched the first two episodes with English subtitles Friday afternoon.
The first episode was. . .a disappointment. I found myself rather bored throughout the episode, and ended up fast forwarding quite a bit. I had several issues with the episode, and wasn't sure if I should go on with episode two. But, since I already had the episode and subtitles, I decided to keep going. After all, I do try to give a show four to six episodes to impress me. And, I liked the second episode a bit more. It had a bit more comedy and I was really seeing the Hana Kimi-ness of it. I don't love the show, but I'm enjoying it.
Episode One:
1. It Dragged. I realize that a lot of it was setup for future storylines and events, but since I've read the show synopsis and character descriptions, I already knew what I feel I need to know.
2. I'm already wrong shipping. I ship Kim Yoon Hee/Moon Jae Shin, and I know that is not where the show is going.
3. I find Lee Sun Joon (Micky Yoo Chun) terribly unattractive. Now, this wouldn't be an issue, expect I also find his acting to be wooden and uninspired.
4. I find Goo Yong Ha (Song Joong Ki) to be an utterly fascinating character. I believe he discovered Yoon Hee's secret the moment she ran into him. He seems to be playing around with her - a dangerous game, as she could be killed for cross dressing and entering Sungkyunkwan - and yet, he doesn't seem to be evil. Maybe just bored.
5. I think Cho Seon could be an ally of Yoon Hee. Both seem to have 'been forced into lives they don't want.
Episode Two:
1. I really enjoyed the comedy in this episode; the other students in Yoon Hee's year seem like they could be great comedic relief.
2. I still find Micky Yoo Chun to be wooden, but I have hope he can improve.
3. I think Cho Seon is going to be a character to watch. I'm looking forward to her story being explored.
4. I'm not really feeling Yoon Hee/Sun Joon, but maybe now that they are sharing a room, I'll start to see something. Of course, Jae Shin is also in the room. . .so, I may just 'wrong ship' the whole drama. At the very least, I want Jae Shin to find happiness.

I didn't like it much either - I think I fast-forwarded near the whole first ep - and was kinda cofused how everyone was so in love with it when it definitely bored me. But I stuck with it til the next week and I think it improves A LOT. By the fourth I admit the humour had made me caving in.
And I am a weakling for the cross-dressing trope too. Heh.
Anyway, I hope it only improves. It could be really good. It's pretty enough, for sure.
