Spoilery thoughts on Doctor Who 5.04
I just watched the fourth episode of the fifth series and I have some thoughts.
Likes:
- The chemistry between Amy and the Doctor.
- The fact that the Doctor calls Amy "Pond".
- The army/church guys and the way they blend together - very today.
- "Angel Bob"
- A huge temple of Weeping Angels - that is creepy.
- The angel coming 'through' the screen and locking Amy in the room.
- Amy being connected to the angels.
- The fact that the Doctor seems to find River slightly annoying.
- The hints that River isn't so lovely and nice, but that she does something to piss the Doctor off later.
Dislikes:
- River Song is truly a doll Mary-Sue.
- No, Amy fan-girling her does not help.
- Amy, the Doctor, and River bringing up the "River is the Doctor's future wife" thing. I think they brought it up every ten minutes or so. I believe it was mentioned three or four times.
- River knows the Doctor's language and how to fly the TARDIS?! (Mary-Sue, Mary-Sue, Mary-Sue!)
- Alex Kingston was a bit wooden.
The story was awesomely creepy and I love it. My one compliant really is the River Song character. She's just the hugest Mary-Sue ever! I find her totally annoying.

It's so bad, really, because Alex Kingston is a lovely actress, very talented... usually. But her character is on of the most annoying and irritating, ever.
Also: Moffat was jealous of "Bad wolf", so he brought two other words to put into time and space: "Hello sweetie". MADE OF FAIL...

I remember reading an interview with her for S4. She commented that she had no idea what her character was saying, so maybe that has something to do with her performance? She doesn't understand sci-fi.
River Song is one of the most irritating characters in DW history, and a lot of it has to do with Moffat's writing. He writes it so she knows everything and so the Doctor's companions fangirl her like there's no tomorrow.

I agree. I know he was not a fan of the Doctor and Rose's relationship. River Song is Moffat's way of having the Doctor have an OTP. She's his future wife, so no one else can ever come close to their OTPness. *rollseyes*
