you're the best lee soon shin (episodes 1-16)

You're the Best Lee Soon Shin is a Korean family drama, focusing on the lives of the three Lee sisters and their mother. The drama pays special attention to youngest sister Lee Soon Shin (singer IU) as she struggles to make it in the acting world. Meanwhile her oldest sister Hye Shin (Son Tae Young) returns home from Hong Kong - daughter and secrets along for the ride. And second sister Yoo Shin (Yoo In Na) deals with work and her love-hate relationship with the boy next door, Dr. Park Chan Woo (Ko Joo Won). There is also Shin Joon Ho (Jo Jung Suk), owner of an up and coming talent agency, who takes Soon Shin on. He bets his ex-girlfriend that he can make Soon Shin a star in less than a year. Oh, and there's a birth secret.

How do I explain this drama? I decided I wanted to watch it because I really have enjoyed Jo Jung Suk in his past two dramas, What's Up? and The King 2 Hearts. I also have soft spots for IU (thanks to Dream High), Yoo In Na, Son Tae Young, and Lee Mi Sook. Plus, I really liked the idea of a family drama focusing on the three daughters (ages 34-24) and their struggles in modern day Korea. It also didn't hurt that Writer Jung Yoo Kyung (What Star Did You Come From?) was behind the drama.

Then I started watching the drama, and I quickly realized something: most of the drama comes from the birth secret. Which is, in a way, a good thing. Get that out earlier and deal with it for the whole of the drama. I do hate when secrets in Korean dramas drag. But, it was bad in another way: it made several characters unlikable. And while they were being unlikable due to the secrets of Lee Soon Shin's birth - other characters were just plain unlikable or just had no story. I know they have 50 episodes (well, 34 episodes left at this point; unless they get more episodes, which is likely with the high ratings) but the pacing feels off.

Character and Story Thoughts. Major Spoilers! )

There you have it. After sixteen episodes, one romance is moving along and the birth secret is moving (though mostly in a circle). Everything else is going rather slow, even for a 50 episode family drama. So, am I still going to watch? Yeah, but I think I'll fast forward through most of it and rely of drambeans to fill in the gaps. At least for most of the drama; I do think it could pick up in the 30s. Would I rec this drama? Maybe. But, it certainly feels like a drama you'd marathon over a month or two rather than one you'd watch over 25 weeks. I think, if anything, I'm watching for the interactions between the three Lee sisters and their respective romantic interests.

Update on What I'm Watching!

I thought I'd give everyone (including myself) an update on what I'm watching. Since most of the series are half-way over, I thought it would also be a good time to discuss how I'm liking and disliking about the shows and where I think/hope they are going. (Spoiler Warnings for the drama!)

Despite wanting rom-coms, I'm barely watching them )

Spring/Summer Season Drama Update

I've now seen the first episode (or more) of most of the dramas I wanted to see. I thought I'd share some thoughts on each drama. So far I have to say that the drama season is going well.

Romantic and cliched dramas )

So - so far I'm really enjoying this drama season!

What I'm Watching (April-June)

Though I may not talk about all of them here, these are the dramas that I plan on watch or am currently watching. Let me know, if there is anything else you think I'd enjoy!

Western Stuff

The Borgias, Season 1 - I've watched all four episodes and am enjoying the show. And, I'm wrong shipping siblings! Oh, that won't end well.
Game of Thorns, Season 1 - Have first episode, need to watch.
Doctor Who, Series 6 - I was rather underwhelmed with the first episode. But, ever since Moffat took over as show runner, I haven't liked his episodes. And, to be honest, I don't love him as a writer in general.

Taiwanese/Chinese Stuff

Rainbow Sweetheart - Okay, so it airs in December. But, I'm still watching all the subbed previews that are coming out this summer.

The Vigilantes In Masks - The first six episodes are subbed! I'll be watching them soon.

(Now. . . if only they'd sub The Myth)

Korean Stuff (the season of romantic comedies!)

49 Days - I skim bits and pieces.

All That Glitters - A switched at birth story! I'm not loving it, but I like certain characters, so I fast forward to their scenes.

Can You Hear My Heart - I am in love with this drama after six episodes.

Ripley - Maybe. The real life story is interesting. But, I'm scared that they'll water it down, to make someone who did something horrible, into a poor misjudged saint. propelled by her greedy desires that stem from an unfortunate childhood. always makes me nervous. I'd hate for it to be another Bad Guy.

You've Fallen For Me - I'm a bit nervous, because Jung Yong Hwa basically played himself in You're Beautiful and Park Shin Hye really only works for me in dramas. But, I like them, so. . .I'll give it a try. Plus - Song Chang Ui!

Romance Town - Once known as Maids, it's the story of a woman who is forced to follow in the family tradition of being a maid after her father puts the family in debt. A story we've seen before (poor girl works for cold, rich man and they fall in love), but I adore Sung Yu Ri.

Lie to Me - Yoon Eun Hye is a government worker who lies that she's married to a rich man played by Kang Ji Hwan, because she's annoyed with people asking her when she'll finally get married. I adore Kang Ji Hwan and think Yoon Eun Hye works best in rom-coms, so. . .I'll be checking this out.

The Greatest Love - The Hong sisters take on K-variety shows and the culture of celebs and Idols being given fake personalities to win the public over. Plus, the cast is awesome.

Japanese Stuff

Shiawase ni Narou yo - I'm not sure. I hear it is a very cliched love story, with grown ups acting like they've never been in a romantic relationship before.

Good Life~Arigato, Papa. Sayonara - I want to, because I love the cast. But, do I need a teary drama about a child dying? If its well written, I do.

Asuko March! - A cliched school drama, to be sure. But, I'll check it for Takei Emi.

Umareru - I really adore most of the main cast. But, the first reviews are saying its a heavy handed family drama, that comes off as preachy. True? Not true? And just what is that family secret?

Rebound - The story of a woman who loses weight, then begins dating a patissier. It sounds very silly, but it stars Aibu Saki, whom I'm very fond of; Hayami Mokomichi, who isn't a great actor, but whom I like; and,Kuriyama Chiaki, whom I also like. Plus, it is written by Yukawa Kazuhiko, who brought me Magerarenai Onna, Koi ga Shitai x3, Dare Yori mo Mama wo Aisu, Jyoou no Kyoushitsu, Gakko ja Oshierarenai!. In short, Yukawa Kazuhiko has a way of writing off-beat characters that I love and strong women.

So, that's it. What I am watching or what I plan to check out. Let me know if I've left something off or if you've seen one of these dramas and already have an option.

Can You Hear My Heart? - An Overview

Can You Hear My Heart? is a thirty episode Saturday/Sunday family/romance drama. On the surface it's a story of birth secrets, revenge, and family. But, at its heart its a love story between two people: a man who went deaf during his childhood and a woman who is searching for her missing stepbrother.

characters )

I've watched the first four episodes with subtitles. It mostly dealt with the main characters as children and laid out all the birth secrets. You really should watch them to understand the remaining episodes. It's an interesting show in that you do know, more or less, who you need to be rooting for and/or against. It's a simple show, but an enjoyable one.

Moon Hee Jung is the writer, and he/she has written other human dramas, so she/he knows how to deal with family and human issues. I've enjoyed several of this writers past projects (Last Scandal, Tree of Heaven, and Smile, You), all of which dealt with family and romances. My one issue with Moon Hee Jung is that he/she tends to have favorite characters that end up with more screen time, so other storylines get ignored or forgotten about half-way through the series. Still, Moon Hee Jung knows how to write good family scenes.

Overall, I would rec this drama to my friend-list, especially if you've enjoyed the writers other works. The drama has a fresh feel to it, and I think it will be a fun watch. It's not a melodrama (yet), but he has some tense moments. Yet, it also has some lovely family moments and some great moments of humor. Watch it.

New Hong Sister Drama

It starts April 27th. It seems too soon, as it feels like the cast and the main storylines were finalized a couple of weeks ago. That worries me, as I have a feeling the first few episodes will be very rushed. Also, a few things have been changed. The title is now The Greatest Love.

The synopsis is as follows: Ae Jung(Gong Hyo Jin) is a female band member who is already over the hill. When she enters a variety show to pretend marriage with the top star (Cha Seung Won), she gets entangled in a love triangle along with her bandmate (Yoo In Na). Yoon Pil Joo (Yoon Kye Sang)is a doctor of oriental medicine who has no interest in the entertainment industry but meets Ae Jung by chance and falls for her.

I have to admit, the synopsis worries me. GHJ's character is no longer an actress, but an "over the hill" (she's 31 in real life!) singer. The reminds me of I Am Legend, and not in a good way. And, there's a pretend marriage? Oy! Those are getting old, Korean Drama Writers. I'm also hoping the start date is wrong, because I think they haven't even started filming.

You know, I used to love the Hong Sisters, but I feel that they are doing too many dramas too close together. And, that is leading to them falling back on bad ideas and going more and more for the cliches. We'll see where this goes.

Korean Dramas and Being Human

I'm shipping Coma Girl aka Ji Hyun and Death Boy aka Scheduler from 49 Days, and the drama hasn't aired yet. Is that weird? I'm just shipping from the photos, I don't even know what relationship they'll have. I'm slightly confused: if Ji Hyun is possessing Yi Kyung for 12 or so hours a day, then what will Nam Gyu Ri be doing as a cast member. Are we just going to see her in flashbacks or will her 'ghost' be hanging around when Yi Kyung is free to be herself.

But what of the classic love square? )

I'm looking forward to this, it's written by So Hyun Kyung, who wrote Prosecutor Princess (loved) and Shining Inheritance (really liked). Plus, the cast isn't bad.

In other news: I've given up on Midas, though I may come back to it this summer. And, despite my love of melodrama, I don't think I'll watch Thorn Birds. It might be too melodramatic, even for me.

In non-Asian drama news: Being Human, S3 ends this Sunday. I'm not sure I can make it. I've loved this season/series - it combined the humor and wacky fun or S1 with the darkness and angst of S2. I think S3 was the best in terms of overall series/season arcs, actually. Anyway, very excited for Sunday!

Korean Drama Midas: Should I or shouldn't I?

Midas is a new Monday/Tuesday drama that will begin airing next week. For a while, I've been debating whether or not I should watch the show. To be perfectly blunt: it has things about it I like and things about it I loathe. So. . .I'm trying to figure out if its worth checking out. Or if my own foolish prejudices will stop me from enjoying what might be a great drama.
