My Lucky Star-episode one summary/review
I'm doing episode summaries for the Twdrama My Lucky Star. Please be aware that these posts are picture heavy and FULL of spoilers - very detailed summaries.
My Lucky Star
Episode One
Episode one begins with Xia Zhi Xing (or Ah Xing) walking down a street, wearing several name brands. AX meets with her boyfriend, Shi San, at a café. The two are meeting with a “client”, who believes they work for a huge jewelry company named E. Shine. Meeting in the same café are: Zhong Tian Qi and Ou Ya Ruo, a couple who have vastly different views of where their relationship is going. TQ thinks they should marry, while YR is already seeing someone else.

YR actually tells TQ that the new guy is “better.” Ouch.
And TQ even proposed with an earring that was made from a piece of his dead mother’s jewelry. And he put it in ice to be clever and romantic. Poor TQ.

Meanwhile, at the other table, AX and SS nervously wait for their client to transfer NT$300 into their account. She thinks she’s buying a rare necklace; she’s actually buying a cheap fake. In our first glimpse of AX’s true nature, the girl actually wonders if it’s okay to charge NT$300 for something that cost her far less to make. SS tells her it is alright, as this is their last job. After this, they will get married and live happily ever after. But, as fate would have it: the cops show up.

AX and SS make a run for it, with AX volunteering to lead the cops away for SS to make a clean break. SS runs into a nearby bathroom, where he meets a waitress. AX makes a break for it outside, where she runs into TQ.

TQ drops the earring he had used as a ring for YR. Thinking AX took it; he holds her and demands the earring back. AX has no idea what he’s talking about, and yells to be let go. TQ notices AX actually didn’t have the earring (it fell on the ground when they bumped into one another) just as the cops show up and arrest AX. AX cures TQ as she is lead away to jail.

TQ is a hero; but, AX is pissed. Interestingly enough, this won't be the last time TQ is praised, while AX is lead away.
In jail, AX is sentences to two years and three months for fraud. Her name is no longer AX, but 2260! (If you get the number as a name thing - I love you)

A Year Later:
It’s been a year, since AX was sent to prison. In front of the head of the jail, she gives them a sob story about her dead parents and an uncle. She turned to a life of crime in order to buy pills for her sick uncle, who died while she was in jail. (She even has a picture) Feeling sorry for her, AX is let out one year and three months early.

Back in her cell (she has to wait a week for the paper work to go through) AX tells her cellmates all about SS and how they will now get married. An older inmate warns AX that men (especially the ones that let women take the blame in crimes) can’t be trusted. Besides, SS hasn’t written in six months and no man would ever be with a girl who had gone to jail. The two get into a fight, as AX is sure that SS has waited for her. Kindly, she tells the older inmate that one day, she will also leave the prison and find love.

A week later, AX is let out and enjoys the sunlight, before heading off to the airport to pick something up.

And just who should be at the airport, but TQ. Coming back from France, with family bodyguards. . . in handcuffs. He ran away from home (like all 20somethings do when their girlfriends dump them), and became an F1 driver. But, he was arrested in France, so his family found him.

Now, he’s back in Taiwan to attend the wedding announcement party of his older brother – but not before he tries to make a break for it.

He runs into the women’s restroom, where AX is. She had hid money there (to be used for her wedding) sometime before she went to jail.

AX, thinks TQ is a pervert. Rightly so. He puts a hand over her mouth and demands she be quiet –before stuffing her into a stall.

AX’s screams alert the men charged with brining TQ home – and AX/TQ are caught in an unusual position.

AX – thinking TQ is a pervert and his bodyguards are cops – happily hands TQ over. She needs no reward or thanks, just knowing the pervert (who she recognizes as the man that got her put in jail a year before) will serve his own jail time is enough for her.
Outside the airport, TQ finds out that it was his brother who asked that he be returned home and not his father. TQ is someone who really wants the love of his father, but can’t seem to get it. As much as TQ loves his older brother, he is jealous that everyone (YR, friends, their father, etc) seem to like his brother more.
TQ agrees to go to the party – but only if he can drive.
Meanwhile, at the party, Tian Jun (TQ's older and beloved bro) greets guest with Mr. Zhong. Or as I like to call Mr. Zhong, Evil!Dad. One of the guest, a white woman whose supposed to be Australia, but has no accent, comments on the Queen Mary. It's a jewel that people can bid on after the party. The jewel is one a necklace and it was owned by TQ and TJ's dead mom. Someone else, a man from a rival jewelry company makes snarky comments, which are largely ignored. Mostly because Snarky won’t be important until the second half of the drama.

TQ gets to the party to find some Hollywood-ish pictures of the bride and groom hanging outside. Honestly? The huge signs are on the tacky and cheesy side. But, honestly? I kind of think TJ is a little cheesy – in a sweet way.

Still upset about YR dumping him for TJ, TQ enters the party and seems to take great pains in being a jerk to his father and flip to his brother. You know, as much as I like TQ, I have to say he’s very immature during the first couple of episodes. It sucks to be dumped, especially for a family member. But. . . TQ is just bratty about it when he goes to see YR in her bridal room.
YR is busy looking at the Queen Mary, the prized jewel of TQ and TJ’s dead mother. This jewel is important. And it is the Queen Mary that really lets us see the truth of who a person is. But, more on that in later episodes.

YR is happy, believing it to be TJ, but when she sees it is TQ her mood sours somewhat. The two have a rather tension-filled convo, in which TQ basically tells YR that she’s only marrying TJ because he’s the First Young Master of E. Shine. TQ tells YR that she loves him. And despite her protests, it’s fairly clear that YR does have some unresolved feelings for TQ.
All of this ends with TQ and YR kissing – something that allows TQ to steal the Queen Mary from around YR’s neck.
It isn’t until TQ is half-way out the building that YR informs her bodyguards that the Queen Mary is missing. Oh, how could she have been so stupid? Evil!Dad has the family guards give chase.
TQ runs to a nearby shopping center. Or maybe the party was taking place in a fancy hotel/shopping center thing. I could never figure that out. Anyway. . . who should TQ literally fall of top of than AX. She’s just bought a fancy Mont Blanc pen for SS, as she believes he is a “boss” of the surrounding areas.

AX, now believing TQ to be a thief, is none too happy with being dragged into his mess – again. TQ drops the Queen Mary, but still makes a break for it (see: immature), leaving AX to take the blame. The Z family bodyguards even start to handcuff her, despite her protests. TQ, noticing the necklace is gone, rushes the bodyguards and picks up the Queen Mary. He’s all set to take off when – AX hand cuffs him to her. (She already had one cuff on her wrist)

TQ demands to know what in the hell she thinks she’s doing. After all, with the body guards knocked out, they were both free to go about their way. AX tells him that he’s the thief and she’s going to make sure he gets his jail time. Besides, AX believes TQ was trying to plant evidence on her – he would have been responsible for her going to jail, again.
Not having time to explain, TQ takes off running, dragging a really upset AX behind him. Seriously, she spends the next couple of minutes screaming that he’s the thief. To be frank, I can’t blame her. As far as AX can tell, TQ has ruined or tried to ruin her life for the last year: first she went to jail because he ‘caught’ her. Secondly, he tried to ‘rape’ her in a bathroom stall. Thirdly, he tried to frame her for stealing a necklace. And now, he’s dragging her all over the streets.

However, it has to be said that despite getting stuck once or twice, TQ and AX really were good at running while handcuffed together.
The two end up in a parking garage, where TQ steals the bodyguard’s car. He stuffs AX inside and floors it. TQ drives through the streets like they are an F1 racetrack. AX is less than impressed with his driving skills and is more than a little scared for her life. TQ drives like a madman and the bodyguards are hot on their trail. AX is literally in a high speed chase – and all she wanted was to buy a pen.

The speed chase ends on the roof of a parking garage, where TQ uses his fancy F1 racing tricks to literally leave the bodyguards and their cars in his dust.

AX is still not impressed by TQ’s driving skills. She may have also had a small heart attack.
Meanwhile, back at the hotel: Evil!Dad holds a family meeting with YR and TJ. The meeting goes something like this:

Mr. Z: YR, you can’t be my daughter-in-law if you can’t even keep a necklace safe. How could you let TQ steal it? What happened in that room?
(no picture available)
TJ: Dad, it isn’t like a thief stole it. Why would YR, who loves me, be wary of TQ. TQ, who she used to date. TQ, who she may or may not have been in love with. TQ, who she seems to still harbor feelings for. But, anyway. . . it isn’t as if he tricked her with a kiss. Because, that would mean she’s just using me. And, I am way too awesome to be used by some money-hungry, self-serving, woman. Right, YR?

YR: . . .
The heartwarming moment is put on pause when the Z family bodyguards come in to announce that they lost TQ and the Queen Mary. They also say that TQ “gave” a girl the necklace and that the Second Young Master had met the same girl earlier at the airport (they leave out the bathroom stall bit). TJ suggests that TQ just couldn’t bear to see Mrs. Z’s necklace sold. YR, wanting to play off what happened, suggest that the girl is TQ’s accomplice and that the whole thing was planned. Evil!Dad doesn’t seem to care too much about the girl or TQ – he just needs the Queen Mary back.
Meanwhile, in a field off the highway, TQ stops the car and has AX get out. He tosses her to the ground, while AX screams that she’ll be raped and killed. Not so, TQ has found a small hammer and wants to try and break the handcuffs apart.

AX stops him however, claiming that if they are apart, no one will be able to prove that she is innocent and he’s the real thief. TQ tells AX that she should just give him the necklace. AX rebuffs that the necklace isn’t TQ; but, it isn’t AX’s either. Good point. However, AX is still worried about getting put back in jail. The two struggle, while TQ touching AX in a few not so nice places. However, AX gets the upper hand when she puts the Queen Mary down her shirt. TQ wants the necklace, but not enough to put his hand down AX’s shirt.
The two fight again, both accusing the other of being a criminal and hooligan. Still, AX is firm in her belief that she must take TQ to the police – if only to make sure that she is cleared of stealing the Queen Mary. AX warns TQ to be nice to her or her boyfriend, SS will beat him up. She talks SS up, showing off the fact that she’s uneducated – she says there are 13 districts in Taipei, when there are only 12 and that she really knows very little about what SS has truly been up to. TQ counters with the fact that he’s never heard of SS.
AX becomes annoyed and tries to call SS’s home (using the phone inside the car). However, SS hangs up on her. When she calls again, AX hears a woman’s voice in the background. Not believing that SS would cheat on her, not after all she’s done for him; AX begins to become rather angry. This is only made worse when TQ begins to laugh at her. Finding a gun (that we later learn is a lighter) between the car seats, AX demands that TQ bring her to where she and SS lived before she was arrested.

The two arrive at a tiny and dirty apartment to find that SS left months ago (without paying the last of the rent). He also left with a pregnant waitress. The landlady is busy cleaning, taking thirty cent stars off the windows and walls of the apartment. This really makes AX upset, as SS had put the starts up for her. Xing literally means ‘Star’ and SS had called AX a star. We get a flashback to happier times. AX and SS really did love each other, even if SS was easily swayed away from her.

It’s at this point that I’m fairly certain AX would break down if she were alone. It’s also here that TQ starts to see the real AX; she isn’t just so loud girl. She’s someone whose also been betrayed. And she’s a much simpler person than he or YR.
TQ even goes so far as to yell at the landlady when she tells AX that she’s a silly girl for believing SS and thinking he’d still want her after her jail time.

After a bit of more commotion, TQ and AX get SS’s new address and head to see him. But, not before TQ can ‘bandage’ AX’ hand – as the landlady stepped on it when AX was trying to get all the stars.

AX and TQ arrive at SS’s new place. AX tells TQ she plans to torture SS and his new wife. But, when they get to the door, AX changes her mind – saying she doesn’t think TQ could handle the blood. She says that, but it’s clear she just doesn’t want to be hurt, and she knows she will be when she sees SS happy without her. TQ knocks anyway. SS answers the door and there’s a bit of a standoff.
SS locks shocked to see AX:

AX looks like she wants to hug SS, punch SS, and run away to hide and cry:

TQ looks like he’s actually starting to feel sorry for someone other than himself:

(Of course, that doesn’t stop him from sitting down on the steps to watch AX and SS have it out)
AX demands to know who SS is living with. She tells him that he promised to marry her after she got out of prison. She did so much for him and she finds him married to another woman, whose also carrying his child. SS tries to shush AX, but she is pissed and rightfully so. It’s then that a crash comes from within the house – SS’s new wife (whose about eight months along) has fallen and is bleeding heavily. I have no idea why she was climbing a foot stool, but, I tend to think she was trying to spy on SS and AX – to see what all the fuss was about. Poor lady, just should have stayed on the couch.
Anyway, SS goes back in, gets his wife, and pushes past AX. TQ volunteers his car and he takes AX’s hand, trying to offer her some comfort.

At the hospital, everyone waits to hear the news on SS’s wife.

When a nurse tells them SS’s wife needs a blood transfusion, AX says she’ll do it – as she has the same type.
So, AX watches SS with his new wife. She’ll save the life of the woman that stole her man. And, she’ll give SS the happiness she lost.

TQ watches over AX, holding her hand.

Sometime later, TQ and AX sit in the waiting area and talk. AX tells TQ that all she thought about while in jail was SS and how happy he would be to see her. She thinks that she was too naïve to believe he’d wait for her and that she shouldn’t have gone running to see him. AX tells TQ that she thought of a thousand different ways for she and SS to reunite: he’d marry her straight away, take her to a new house, tell her he was sorry for making her suffer.
This all strikes a chord with TQ – who has been feeling the same way about YR. AX goes on to say that it’s her fault SS’s wife and baby are in trouble, and that if anything happens to them. . .
TQ cuts her off – SS’s wife has AX’s strong blood. He puts his hand on hers and tells AX it will all be alright. AX tells TQ his hand is big and warm. This makes TQ nervous – so he calls AX a pet. Yeah, TQ is a bit of a dork.
Annoyed, AX tells TQ not to look down on her and that she doesn’t need his comfort. Doesn’t he know she’s the invincible star? TQ laughs, asking AX why her mood changes as often as the wind. Echoing what YR had told TQ a year before: that his personality was like the wind. It’s then that TQ starts to realize that he and AX are actually very similar.

The moment is broken, when SS comes running over to announce that his new wife has given birth to a girl. Way to ruin the mood, SS.
Everyone goes to see SS’s wife and the lady. While there, SS and his wife decide that AX should be the baby’s godmother.

AX asks to see SS outside, but before she can speak, SS kneels. He wants to tell AX he’s sorry for causing her so much pain. He’s decided to settle down after finding out his then girlfriend was carrying his child. He wants to give his daughter the stable life they never had.

Thinking of the baby (and having SS’s wife staring at her through the door), AX tells SS that it’s okay. In fact, she cheated on him first – with TQ. They met when he taught a class at her prison. She gives SS the money she had saved for their wedding, telling him it’s for the baby.

Dumbstruck, but very happy, SS tells AX he really is sorry. He then tells TQ that ice cream makes AX the happiest. That AX is stubborn, that she’s not very brave, that she was orphaned at a young age and grew up alone, that little things make her the happiest. TQ has now learned more about AX then he seems to know about YR. AX, with the fakest smile and tears in her eyes, tells SS to take care of his family and live happily.
Outside the hospital, AX breaks down and cries.

TQ tells her that he thought she wanted to beat SS up. He offers her his shoulder, gently calling her a fool.

AX thought she was the luckiest person in the world. But now, she has nothing. TQ disagrees: she has the world’s most beautiful heart. It’s AX’s turn to be uncomfortable, and she tells TQ he should go. But, they are still handcuffed together. AX picks the lock, and they are freed.

Before she was worried TQ would run and leave her to take the blame for the Queen Mary. But it doesn’t matter anymore. She had been living to reunite with SS and now she has nothing to live for. Anything that happens to her will be fine. TQ watches AX walk away for a moment, before turning away.

It’s then that TQ hears the screech of car tires and a horn blow.
