Review for Invasion's "Round Up"

Invasion Review for “Round Up”: aka “Just Like Buddy-Cop Movies”: aka “This Is Why I Always Stand In the Back of Rooms”: aka “Hey, Look the Yellow Lights Are Back”:

I began watching this episode full of excitement and finished with a: ‘Damn, why are the episodes so freaking short?’ Really, I think they are between 35-40 minutes without ads.

Let me also say this: Russell and Tom are so like a buddy-cop movie from the 80s. You know the ones, with the younger guy all gun-ho and reckless and the older guy saying things like: ‘I’m too old for this shit’ and ‘We need to split up’. Also, Dave and Lewis aka the sidekicks of Russell and Tom working together? That was great stuff, very 90s buddy-cop movie, with the looks and the guns and all that jazz.

Let’s move on to the characters.

Tom: You just want to give him a big hug, don’t you? The man has been betrayed by nearly everyone he trusted. I felt his pain when he didn’t know what to do. The guy is good at acting in control, but when he loses control he has no idea how to get it back. That could really hurt him in the end. ‘Specially if Szura has his way. On another note, I enjoyed the Tom and Kira scene in the truck. In a way it was a great father/daughter moment and in another it showed that Szura’s wrong: even if you are a hybrid, your kids can still be apart of you. You don’t have to lose the qualities that make you human, even if you aren’t really one. Score one for Tom.

Russell: Russ, Russ, Russ. God. I just…dude’s wife and kids are being held somewhere and he sticks close to the ex? I mean, I get why he did it-info and whatnot. But, eh…it bugged me. While Tom gets more interesting and complex each week, Russell just seems to be doing the same old thing each week. I’m really hoping Russell ‘brings it’ next week, because I’d hate to find his character boring.

Mariel: First, I don’t think it will be her hybrid-ness that gets in her trouble, it will be the fact that she is a doctor and a mother. I honestly don’t think she will be able to just let the pregnant hybrids die. I honestly think she’ll go against whoever she has to go against and will be there for them. Secondly, the scene where she was taken from her kids and they were all trying to get to her and calling her was so sad. Poor kids. Poor Mariel. Thirdly, I like that she was calm and seemed to have control of herself when she was with Szura. You go, Mariel!

Larkin: Brilliant in the way she distracted the solider. Larkin is getting some of her early season fire back. I’m also enjoying the way she is there for and protecting Rose, Jesse, and even Kira. Larkin may be very young, but she is a great motherly figure for all three of them. Hell, she’s been the person that has basically taken care of Jesse and Rose all season. I like Larkin and hope that she is developed farther in season two.

Dave: The use of the door was awesome and so something a normal person would do in that type of situation! That is way Dave is the ‘Joe normal’ of the show. That is why Dave is awesome. And I must give it up for the way Dave handled the two deputies: he was calm, cool, and matter of fact. I cannot say enough good things about him. Tom and Russell may be the so called heroes, but Dave is the man.

Lewis: Yay, he isn’t all evil-hybrid! I must say, I thought he might be. But, he isn’t. Like Dave, he handled the situation with the two deputies very well. The looks he gave Dave and the way he basically figured out they should either leave together or separate the two deputies was very well done. Points to Lewis!

Jesse: I loved, loved, loved the way he tried to get to his mother as she was being taken away. Jesse may have spent most of the season being upset with Mariel, but she is his mother and he loves her. Again, it was a great way of showing that despite the fact that Mariel is and isn’t Mariel, she is still basically a mother and her kids do still love her. Plus, I adore the way he looks after his sister and stepmother.

Kira: I like that she volunteered to go find help. It was nice that she thought of Rose and maybe even the fact that Larkin shouldn’t be running around while pregnant. Kira is actually a really brave girl and I think that she is coming into her own nicely. Again, I have to comment on the scene with Kira and Tom in the truck. It was a great scene for the two of them. Oh, and the Tom saving Kira and the hug was also very nice. Despite everything, Kira loves her dad and he loves her.

Rose: Look, she’s like nine, so I don’t have much to say about her. Other then the fact that I feel for her. As far as she knew: her dad and stepdad are somewhere, her mother was taken and could be dead, and her stepsister could be dead. Poor kid must have been feeling pretty bad this week. Thank goodness she had Jesse and Larkin to look after her. But, next week…it looks like she gets taken away! Rose!

Szura: He seemed nervous and kind of lacking in control. Apparently, he didn’t plan for all the hybrid ladies to go into labor at the same time. He seemed almost “human”. Freaky. For someone that has been so ‘bad-ass’ all season, the guy seemed to be quiet and nervous at the current situation. Guess he didn’t plan that far ahead? Szura is a very fascinating character and one that I hope to learn more about in the upcoming episode.

Moving on to the ‘Ships:

Mariel/Russell: Oh, the M/R shippers must be happy after the very loving moment and hug the two of them shared. It is very clear that the two still have an attraction and that they still care for one another. The question is: where will it lead? (I don’t think Tom would be able to take it if his wife and new BFF betrayed him!)

Larkin/Russell: While her husband is getting ‘close’ to the ex, she’s screaming for him in fear. Poor Larkin. I really hope she doesn’t get shafted in the end.

Kira/Lewis: No moments, but Dave’s line about Kira thinking Lewis walks on water had me thinking: ‘Lord, Kira’s got it bad. And she apparently likes to share it with Dave of all people. Or Dave is a gossip. Weird either way.’

Moving to complete randomness:

-It was raining and storming and some people had no coats or rain jackets and some had coats, but they were opened. Some people will be catching colds.

-The yellow lights are back. The yellow lights freak me out. It’s the perfect plan, though. Get a bunch of people together, open the doors, and let ‘nature’ do its thing.

-I guess I love all the characters, because by the end of it, I wanted to give them all a big old hug.

The preview:

Looked intense! Gun play, pregnant hybrids, Rose getting carried off! Can it be the 17th yet? Because I have no life and because Invasion owns my soul, I am so going back and watching it again, this time in slow-mo. I’ll be back with what I see.
