Serenity
She was screaming again and hitting against his chest. The girl, Rayne, was crying and screaming at Matt as he tried to get her to calm down. The two siblings were in the middle of the common area on Serenity and Matt couldn’t help himself from wishing that he could just get Rayne into the infirmary.
“No shots! He gives her the wrong ones and she does not want the ones he has to give. She wants her mommy. Please, don‘t.” Rayne hit Matt ‘s chest to farther her point. “She-” Rayne paused as strong hands grabbed her arms from behind. Suddenly, Rayne’s back was against a broad chest. “Jayne Chester Cobb Jr. has her.” Rayne stated with a small and oh so sad sigh.
“Yeah, he does.” Jay spoke into his sister’s ear. “An’ he ain’t lettin’ go, mei-mei.” Jay looked over Rayne’s head and at Matt. “She’s goin’ need t’be…” he trailed off as Rayne began to cry.
Matt moved closer to Rayne, looked her deeply into the eyes, and spoke softly and sweetly. “Ray, sweetie, it won’t hurt. Matts promises.” He reached out and moved some hair out of Rayne’s face. “You’ll just go to sleep for a little while, dong ma?”
Rayne just shook her head. “It is the wrong kind.” She whispered.
“No, I promise it’s the right kind.” Matt replied sweetly. He quickly went into the infirmary and returned with a large needle. As gently as he could, he stuck the needle into Rayne’s arm. Her body went limp against Jay’s chest. Matt turned his attention to Jay. “Let’s get her to her room.”
Jay lifted Rayne into his arms. “Sleep sweet, Ray.”

Serenity
Shadow crept along the guest quarters of his ship as he silently made his way to Rayne’s bedroom. Everyone else was asleep and Shadow wanted to check on Rayne. After all, she had missed supper. Both Matt and Jay assured everyone that Rayne would be better tomorrow, but Shadow just wanted to make sure.
“Shadow.” The captain of Serenity jumped. He nervously glanced toward the common area, where Derri sat, reading a large volume. “She’s asleep.”
“Yeah.” He grinned. “L’ke you should be?”
“Like you should be.” Derri echoed. “Go t’sleep, Shadow. Let Rayne git her rest, dong ma?” Derri set her book down on the sofa and stood up. “Leave her be, baby brother.”
“Baby brother? We’re only a few months apart.” Shadow made a face. “‘Sides I’m jus’ bein’ a good Cap’n.”
Derri shook her head with a little sigh. “Shadow.” She gave him a pointed look. “Shadow, a good captain worries ‘bout his whole crew an’ not jus’ one girl.” Derri paused for a moment to gather her thoughts. “It…it’s not right the way you look at her. She’s…she’s sick an’ confused an’ she don’ need you tellin’ her you love her. That jus’ confuses her more. She’s not…she’s not the Rayne we knew and love. She’s different now an’ you can’ go tryin’ t’turn her back int’who she was.” Shadow opened his mouth to speak, but Derri put a hand up. “Rayne is different an’ you gots t’stop tryin’ t’hold ont’ the past. You’re our captain now an’ you gotta take responsibility for us all. Can’ be selfish now, Shadow.”
“Derri, I appreciate it, bu’ you jus’ gotta have faith.” He laughed softly. “An’ not jus’ in your God.”
“Have the faith, jus‘ not in your heart. You got a way of bein’ an arrogant ass, you know?” Derri offered her brother a little smile. “Jus’ don’ try and hurt or confuse her, okay?” She went back to the sofa, grabbed her book, and headed to the crew quarters.
Shadow waited a whole second before moving to Rayne’s door and unlocking it. Shadow found the room empty.

Shadow found Rayne thirty-seven minutes later, she was hiding in the cargo bay, in the hidden compartment where they usually hide illegal cargo. Rayne had her legs up against her chest and she was rocking gently back and forth. Shadow simply curled into the compartment and let his back hunch over, so he could fit all the way and still see eye to eye with Rayne.
“You should be asleep.” He told her in a small whisper.
“She doesn’t like it.” Rayne answered in a tiny whisper. “It isn’t righteous and she longs for the righteous.”
Shadow softly chuckled. “You sound like Derri.”
“Derri will spring eternal.” Rayne agreed with a sharp nod. “Forever and ever Derri will be eternal.” She looked at him through her long and unkempt hair. “Shadow does not have a shot for her, does he? She could rather he give her a mission.”
Shadow shrugged, or at least he tried to. “No, none of that. I’m not one fer shots or missions. Jus’ really bad plans.” He waited a beat, but Rayne didn’t laugh or try and tell him that his plans were good. Rayne just stared at him. “Uh, so…why don’ we play a game? Huh? L’ke I’ll say a word an’ you make a whole sentences outta it?” Rayne made no movement. “Okay, first word: don’t.”
The little and crowded compartment was silent for a long while. Shadow was beginning to think that Rayne had gone into some sort of daze, but then-
“Don’t fear the reaper. Don’t spit into the wind. Don’t touch guns. Don’t touch knives. Don’t hurt Rayne. Don’t go off ship. Don’t scream or hit. Don’t cry. Don’t give her the wrong shots.” Rayne stared at Shadow and a small smile crept over her face. “Don’t pine over dead girls.”
Shadow looked away from Rayne, suddenly feeling dirty. “Rayne-”
“Suicide is painless.” Rayne spoke up. “It’s the parts that come afterward that hurt.” Rayne nodded knowingly. “She knows that. She killed herself and yet…” Rayne trailed off sadly. “Covered in snow, she is.”
Shadow nervously cleared his throat; Matt and Jay were better at dealing with Rayne when she got like this. Of course, Rayne hardly got ‘like this’ around him. “Look, Rayne Drops,”
Rayne suddenly began laughing, causing Shadow to trail off. “He fears the reaper. She told him not to, but he ignored her. Always and always ignores her, they do.”
“Rayne, is it the shots?” Shadow guessed. “Is that how we ignore you? The shots, what are they?”
Rayne stopped rocking. “The shots make sure she always comes home. They keep her human and without them she will stop. It will all go away and she will…she’ll just stop.” She shook her head. “No more toys for her, you see. No more…anything.”
He took a deep breathe and quickly tried to figure it all out. “You’re sayin’…those gorram sons of whores did something t’you, that makes it so…so’s they gotta give you shots or you’ll…git sick? An’ these same gorram sons of whores are on a Core planet, in a top secret government building, a place you can’ ‘member?” Rayne nodded slowly. “Oh. So you kind of need the shots, huh?” Rayne slowly nodded again. “Huh.”
“She won’t be a human much longer.” Rayne injected.
“What? No, Rayne, you are a human, dong ma? It don’ matter what they did t’you or what they made you do. You are human an’ a girl an’ yer perfect jus’ the way you are.”
“Shadow.” Rayne paused. “Shadow sees Rayne as a girl? He does not see her as broken?” Shadow shook his head ‘no’. “He does not wish to try and save or fix her?”
“No, you don’ need that. You’re you an’ it’s alright. You‘re perfect jus‘ the way you is-are.” Shadow offered her a small smile. “You’re a good girl an’ what’s past is past. I’ll tell yer brothers an’ the others ‘bout the shots. We’ll find a way t’git you your shots, promise.”
Rayne returned the small smile. “He is perfect in her eyes, too. She does not think she has a soul anymore, so…” Rayne touched her chest. “Body meets,” She moved her arm and touched his chest. “soul. He sees her as a human girl and as something not to be fixed or saved. She will always love him for that.” Rayne chewed on her lower lip for a moment. “She promises to try and have a good day, tomorrow.”
“I love you, too.” He reached up, took her hand off his chest and took it into his. “Now, we best git you t’ bed.”
Rayne allowed Shadow to help her out of the crawl space and to her room. He tucked her into bed and kissed her forehead. With a ‘good night, Rayne love.’ Shadow relocked Rayne into her bedroom.
He stood outside her bedroom for a moment, before shaking his head sadly and grinning softly. Shadow found himself whistling happily as he headed back to his own bunk.
