The script was written by the author of the book. As far as I can tell it follows the novel fairly closely. I thought it had a very Western feel to it. I liked it. The cast had a nice chemistry. I will say that the scenes with the American cast members were awkward. Not because the Japanese cast had horrible English - I was surprised how good Maki's English was. It was more like. . .the American cast didn't know what to do.? I'd say it's a film worth checking out if you liked the book or like anyone in the cast. Maki Horikita and Ken'ichi Matsuyama pretty much own the movie.
